Colin Thompson's book, Atilla the Bluebottle is absolutely fantastic for children (and adults!) of all ages. The book is a collection of short stories about all the creatures that live in the same overgrown and exciting garden. Apart from Attila the bluebottle, there's Arkwright the cat and of course, Geoff the snail. The book is a wonderful journey through the undergrowth, a book of discovery and adventure, and Colin Thompson has a magical way of describing the garden, the creatures and the way they feel about each other. I really enjoyed this book because not only does Thompson use evocative language, but the book is absolutely packed with amazing illustrations of the animals and their homes, including a plan of the garden, so you can see exactly where they all live. The book charts the development of the garden over the course of one year, the changes that take place, and all the funny things that the animals get up to. A magical and enchanting book of delights, fun and sadness, its an absolute must have for bedtime stories!
