Spellbinding 17 Nov 2009

Ralfe Band's second album is exquisite. I never thought they could surpass the singular magic of their first album, Swords. This second offering really carries it off, and stamps their indelible, unique soundscape firmly into the part of your consciousness which sets the playlist of tunes that uplift and mesmerise day after day.

Attic Thieves: The Ralfe Band - Stumble into this delightful world

I first came across the Ralfe Band with their third album, the soundtrack to the amazing Bunny and The Bull. I was so impressed with the soundtrack when watching the film that I looked up the musicians and decided to buy some of their albums.

And I was not disappointed. This is their second album, released in 2008. It is an inventive album, full of beautiful tunes and inventive music that really satisfies when listening to it. They have a very folky/gypsy vibe about them, overlaid with more recent musical influences. At times it sounds like Gogol Bordello on a huge dose of vallium mixed with `Crazy Diamond' era Pink Floyd, all overlaid with a layer of Satie. The tone is generally laid back and relaxed, though there is a sense of something just bubbling underneath the calm exterior that is waiting for the opportunity to break through and let rip. It's a captivating, at times sweet, at times slightly dark record. I loved it, 4 stars. Off to buy their first album, Swords, now, and I look forward to hearing more from this talented bunch in the future.
