Product Description

Book Jacket

Positive attacking in throwing and ground work is at the heart of all the best judo. This is a fundamental attitude of world champions Katsuhihiko Kashiwazaki and Hidetoshi Nakanishi, who are now among the foremost teachers in Japan. But this boldness must be based on a sound technical understanding. Attacking Judo is a new concept in judo publishing based on simple drawings rather than long complex explanations. The main throws and ground work techniques of judo are placed in a context of combinations and counters. Crucial details of pull, push and direction of throw are indicated by arrows. All the techniques are arranged in sections which are both easy to absorb and to memorise. Attacking Judo emphasises classical Japanese judo yet teaches in a modern and accessible style. It is a book that will have a direct influence on everyone's judo practice, from beginner to black belt.

As the title states, this book is a guide to combinations and counters used in Judo, covering transitions from both standing techniques and in groundwork. The book demonstrates each combination or counter sequence using a series of good drawings, with arrows in the drawings indicating the appropriate push and pull, and text summarising the key points. What impresses me about this book, is how the drawings and text manage to get the ideas across effectively in such a simple and uncluttered layout. Overall, this is an excellent book from these two former world champions.

I've had this book for a few years and keep coming back to it. To my mind, it reflects the reality of randori competitive judo really well since it shows dynamic transitions between techniques rather than presenting them on their own. Like all good judo instruction its based on an understanding of balance and what happens to it when techniques get applied to someone whose really fighting back.

As an overview of what its really about (IMHO) hard to beat.

This book is broadly divided up into standing techniques and ground work. The first part of the book covers standing techniques and this is then subdivided by throw. For each throw the basic technique is described, and then methods to use this throw in combination with other techniques are described and then counters are also given. So for example in the case of the throw O-Goshi, the book describes how this throw can be used in combination with Harai-Goshi, Kouchi-Gari and Ouchi-Gari. These techiques are illustrated, with additional helpful points also provided. The techniques shown in the ground work section again are well described and provide useful ideas for practice.
Illustrations to show the techiques are well used throughout the book. The two characters in the illustrations both wear white Gis and have black belts, the only difference between them being that one has white hair and the other black. This is generally fine, except on rare occasions when you cannot see the hair in the illustration and you are left wondering which one is which.
I would say that this book will be of most use to someone that already knows the techniques, and want to get some ideas for their own randori. Certainly that is how i have used the book, and it has proved to be very helpful..Recommended
