Amazon.co.uk Review

Full of gory practical effects and fluent pop-cultural references, Attack the Block--an alien invasion scenario squeezed into a single apartment building--belongs to the same species of British genre comedy as Edgar Wright's Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Director Joe Cornish takes some clever routes around the limitations of his budget, filming on location in London's Heygate Estate (itself a once utopian science-fiction experiment) and mining the freshness of his young cast's authentic street slang. When the aliens arrive (they simply drop, during a frosty Bonfire Night, out of the shining pepper of the stars) they're also smartly designed: primal and supernatural, no detail escapes their digitally-blackened fur other than a set of menacingly glowing teeth, all of them incisors. The block's defence is up to a group of teenage hoods, lead by the imposing Moses (John Boyega) and reluctantly helped by middle-class neighbour Sam (Jodie Whittaker). Armed with fireworks and mounted on muscle bikes, they launch an entertaining and Spielbergian resistance through the block's labyrinth of corridors and walkways. As the body count racks up, Joe Cornish's smart script highlights the block's painful social divisions: Sam, the audience surrogate, is mugged by Moses' crew in the film's opening scene, and through Sam we're drawn into the poignant domestic lives of kids on the brink of gangsterism. More alien to each other than the beasts on their tail, the survival of these divided class members hangs on the recognition that they have a stake in each other. --Leo Batchelor

A lot of fun 3 May 2012
Format:DVD
Having seen how split the reviews are, I feel moved to write my own.
Lots of other viewers found it hard to engage with the characters because of the nasty mugging the commit at the beginning of the film, which is quite understandable, and perhaps if I'd been in a different mood when watching, I'd have felt the same. However, I think that the character arcs that they go through are the real strengths of this film. I've grown bored of films where the characters seem set in stone as 'goodies' or 'baddies'; Hollywood is the worst offender, but plenty of Brit-flicks do it too. The world isn't like that, people are complicated, and the script and acting are strong enough to make the progression of the characters believable.
Add to that that I love monster movies, especially when the CGI is not overwhelming, and the coarse humour gave me a lot of laughs.
There is some social commentary in here, but the film doesn't beat you round the head with it. The message I took was basically '15 is a bit young to be beyond redemption'.
Finally.. to use the complete unknown John Boyega as the lead was a risk that paid off brilliantly. I look forward to seeing him in bigger and more serious roles soon.

Well the charcters in this film are 22years my junior and relating to them was difficult (never was In a "Gang" myself), understanding some of their lingo was like trying to hold a coversation with my neice! However, that said, that IS how they speak nowadays (so people harping on about the poor English really should wind their necks in).

Ok so they mug someone at the start.... it happens, some people whined about it being a "Brutal" mugging???? Not from my seat it wasnt! "But we cant relate to them as their little scumbags they cry!!" I'll point these people towards othersuch films as Hitman (erm hello, he's a hitman!), Twighlight (a vampire? a 400 year old one...dating a school girl!! Dont we have a word for older men preying on young girls? ), Lock stock (Great film but they're all wrong-uns in their own way)

The simple fact is I knew what type of film it was before I watched it and still found plenty of enjoyment in it. It's both funny & action packed (well thats a slight overstatement but I'm just following suit from all the drama queens).

Definately worth a watch if you have an open mind and a sense of humour (would probably suit people aged 15-40 tops)

Not funny, not scary, just awful
Cornish should hang his head in shame. And as other reviewers have noted, the main characters deserve a damn good thrashing. Which unfortunately they don't get.
