Product Description

Sergeant 'Fancy Jack' Crossman and his final battle in the Crimean War The year is 1855 and the port of Sebastopol is still being besieged by the allies but defended vigorously by the Russians. This is of no consequence to Jack Crossman and his hardy band of brothers as they constantly breach the defences and enter the city to carry out some discreet British business. Russian sharpshooters mysteriously disappear as Crossman and his men strive to make a dent in Russian morale. But these foxhunts serve merely as a warmup to the British attack on the Redan, a fortification guarding Sebastopol. The British attack, when it does come, is ill planned and ill advised and ends in total disaster and Crossman is forced to bear witness to the wholesale massacre of his fellow soldiers - and only survives himself at great personal loss.

Although the initial thought of reading something about a chap called "Fancy Jack" was a little off-putting - I have thoroughly enjoyed all of this series. There's not a lot of novels about this era, and it shows that in many ways the "soldiers lot" hadn't improved since the Napoleonic era. It's also refreshing to have a very "real" lead character, one that feels fear, embarrassment, jealousy and all the other foibles that we humans have! Plus - this one can get hurt....

"Attack on the Redan" is an enjoyable and well paced adventure situated at the Battle of Sevastopol. It doesn't give much of the larger picture of the battle, but is atmospheric and well-written. To my mind it is not as slick or as pacey as Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe stories, and the battle scenes are certainly not as good, but it is an enjoyable ride. I particularly like the inclusion of a female soldier - an aspect of history that deserves to be more widely told.

For those familiar with the Fancy Jack stories this is a fitting end to the Crimean campaign stories. Usual mix of military action and behind the scenes life for Fancy Jack and the crew. Probably only concern is that the actual battle of the Redan takes up a small part of the novel, but to those already accustomed to Mr Kilworth's style it is not unusual. Overall a fitting end to an interesting set of books, and Fancy Jack deserves his place beside Richard Sharpe on the bookshelf.
