I have a standard 500GB External HD, would I be able to plug that into this console, watch the videos I have on it and use it as a hard drive for Xbox stuff?

I'm really unsure about how the hard drive stuff works, 4GB doesn't sound like much at all, but it's cheaper so I was hoping I could just use my existing HD, plug it into the xbox and save myself some money.

Cheers :)

No the hard drive has to be put into the machine via an opening on the side of the console. It sort of sits in a pinned slot. Ideally your better off getting the 250Gb, saves the hassle of finding a compatible hard drive.

You can use usb sticks but your limited to 16Gb. Again thats not a lot of storage so if you intend downloading games, installing games etc its not ideal.
