Product Description

A rare exploration of the underlying sexual tension between two close male friends, ATOMIC AGE charts the evolution of burgeoning youthful sexuality over the course of one night in Paris. Victor and Rainer are typical young French hipsters on their way to Paris, swigging Red Bull, bantering about the Stone Roses, and musing about what awaits them. Checking into a club, Victor hits on the girls, while Rainer spikily rebuffs the advances of a male admirer.

Testosterone surges, bravado leads to a face-off...just another night on the town. Until it's not. This stunningly shot character study perfectly captures what it s like to be young men, fumbling their way through a sexual awakening, whilst negotiating the delicate bonds of friendship.

This experimental film from Helena Klotz concerns two teenage friends who hit Paris for a night out and end up exploring the nature of their relationship and the wider meaning of a boring and worthless existence. Victor and Rainer (Eliott Paquet & Dominik Wojcik) begin their dialogue on the way to Paris and along with several incidents inside and outside a nightclub, park bench and forest reach their own seperate conclusions as to how they feel about each other. This is NOT a gay buddy buddy movie. It is not even particularly entertaining. And the thread of their conversations barely holds together a series of vignettes showing the progress of their night. For example, Ranier is hit upon by a persistant gay admirer whom he brushes away with contempt, while Victor is a flop trying to get off with a couple of girls. Outside, an odd philosophical argument, featuring Niels Schneider who adorns the cover of this dvd, (this poses a question as to motive considering he only appears for a few minutes) and who has appeared in a couple of Xavier Dolan films, turns violent. And so on. I think the key to how Ranier feels about Victor is when he vents his anger at him in Polish, but it was only on second viewing that I noticed this. These short stories within stories are interesting but it appears that stylistic devices such as long poetic quotations, recordings of Ronald Reagan telling a joke, an eclectic soundtrack oddly edited, and the whole thing done with minimal lighting, granted everything is set in nightime, eventually overwhelm any storytelling potential Atomic Age has. I found it all quite depressing. So, despite a lingering interest in what Atomic Age is getting at, it eventually emerges as a triumph of style over substance and as such will only appeal to a minority audience. The movie lasts 70 mins and there are no extras apart from a trailer. In French with accurate subtitles.

Not a bad little film, some of it, such as the nightclub scenes are shot very beautifully, and the two leads are good.
It's questionable how much content there really is, and some of the lines were so pretentious they had me laughing out loud (do French teenagers really walk around having existential conversations?), and even with the relatively short run time I was at times a bit bored. But it's worth watching, as long as you aren't expecting the French Die Hard.

In fact I sent this back, No story line as such, plus the guy on the cover, blink & you miss him, the 2 lads in the film, nothing out of the ordinary, & don't expect any action!!!!
