Product Description

Product Description

What 'really constitutes an architectural atmosphere', Peter Zumthor says, is 'this singular density and mood, this feeling of presence, well-being, harmony, beauty ...under whose spell I experience what I otherwise would not experience in precisely this way'. Zumthor's passion is the creation of buildings that produce this kind of effect, but how can one actually set out to achieve it? In nine short, illustrated chapters framed as a process of self-observation, Peter Zumthor describes what he has on his mind as he sets about creating the atmosphere of his houses. Images of spaces and buildings that affect him are every bit as important as particular pieces of music or books that inspire him. From the composition and 'presence' of the materials to the handling of proportions and the effect of light, this poetics of architecture enables the reader to recapitulate what really matters in the process of house design.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sensibilities approached in a casual tone, 6 Sep 2009
Peter Zumthor presents a casual speech recorded in a conference, where he tries to define what moves his creative process and how he himself relates to architecture, approaching the human sensibility to its surrounding materialities and even his own feelings facing the latter, showing how he tried to apply all of it in his own buildings.

I must say that most of the pratical examples given are based in Zumthor's own work, but such a fact doesn't stop Zumthor from developing an engaging speech that covers all general basis and notions/lessons regarding the books' title, after all the conference's audience were mainly students.

Overall, not an essential book for students, with the price being quite high given the small size of the book (main reason for 3 star rating), which giving the casual tone of the text makes this book easily readable. But if you can afford it and have a curiosity regarding Zumthor's work or the main theme approached by the book, you will not be disappointed by this. Fairly good amount of food for thought here.
