More About the Author

Wallace Peters, a world-renowned physician and scientist, devoted his working life to research and academic teaching in the fields of tropical medicine and parasitology. For over 50 years his peripatetic life was shared by his wife Ruth, a linguist and art embroiderer. After her death from cancer, well into his eighties he continued to devote his time to writing, his primary objective being to stimulate people in retirement to regard their later years as a golden opportunity to enjoy the autumn of their lives. "Four passions: conversations with myself" was published in 2012.

Product Description

Review

"This book is a visual treat. This is a well-constructed book where the authors have decided to structure the information on the mechanism of transmission of the disease. This allows for a sensible consistency in presentation which may not please those who like a breakdown of disease on the basis of the type of organism or organ affected. The authors have gone to great effort to include the range of issues related to these diseases and their choice of images provides a good way for visual learning about a condition, eg. children holding urine samples showing haematuria linked to schistosomiasis and the range of histopathology images. This is the complete opposite of a 'dry' text with informative images falling off the page.

The more that I delved into this book the more I started to enjoy it and learn. The book is structured on the basis of the mechanism of transmission of the disease, a practical and sensible way which should make it easier for someone coming to tropical medicine to learn the range of conditions. The published visual images are broad ranging and very informative. If you are a visual learner this book would represent a good investment."

REVIEW OF PREVIOUS EDITION:

"For those requiring essential information on tropical medicine or ID, first call should be this book." Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine

The information provided under various chapters with superb colour photographs and illustrations is concise, accurate and easily digestible. This is a work of high scholarship and an indispensable source of information. As such it is highly recommended as an essential atlas (which also includes a CD-ROM) on the desk of each medical and nursing practitioner of travel medicine, and as a book readily available to clinicians, laboratory and public health practitioners.

A neccessary companion to the study of tropical medicine 30 Jun. 2007
By Oystein Anders Strand - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is an excellent companion to the study of tropical medicine and clinical parasitology for the beginner as well as the experienced reader. The pictures, graphs and maps are very good and this edition has been updated and expanded significantly with new illustations, maps, updates of life cycles of parasites, relevant x-rays, clinical pictures and illustrations of parasites and hosts. A perfect companion to a textbook of tropical medicine. Highly recommended. The resolution of the pictures on the CD-ROM are, however, a bit too low to enjopy fully for my eyes. The book is recommended for the postgraduate courses in tropical medicine and medical parasitology at the University of Oslo. Oystein Strand MD PhD, Associate professor of ID,Akershus University Hospital,Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo, Norway

This atlas is a book that every healthcare provider dealing with tropical disease/infectious disease should have in their library. It is very comprehensive in detail but is most useful in conjunction with a book detailing the specifics of these disease.
