Written by one of the most consulted authorities on the subject, Atlas of Developmental Field Anomalies of the Human Skeleton is the pre–eminent resource for developmental defects of the skeleton. This guide focuses on localized bone structures utilizing the morphogenetic approach that addresses the origins of variability within specific developmental fields during embryonic development. Drawings and photographs make up most of the text, forming a picture atlas with descriptive text for each group of illustrations. Each section and subdivision is accompanied by brief discussions and drawings of morphogenetic development.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous book with only one problem 21 Oct 2013
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a very well written book covering the many developmental abnormalities that can arise in our bony tissues. It is very well illustrated both with photos but also with very accurate and useful hand drawings showing and explaining the abnormal anatomy.

The author does point out that certain infection suffered by the mother while pregnant can cause abnormal bony anatomy but does not cover trauma or nutritional causes.

The most puzzling oversight is that the pelvic girdle is not comprehensively covered.

This book is ideal for anyone studying paleopathology, orthopaedics and would also be very useful for any student of palaeoanthropology, which makes slight regrettable that the author does not discuss evolutionary pressures that can also relate to the variation and production of skeletal anomalies.

I hope this review does not read as being too critical, as this is a fantastic book. I just hope that the author addresses some of these issues for a 2nd addition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Reference book for Medical Students 25 Aug 2013

I am currently training to be a midwife.

I have so many text books about the different aspects of nursing, but there are no books out there like this that deal with the potential anomalies that can occur during birth and the early stages of development.

The book is extremely detailed and not only contains illustrated versions of the anomalies, but also real life cases.

I found the book extremely fascinating and it will definitely help me with my studies and help me to recognise potential common birth defects such as cleft palate, club foot etc

The book is quite thin at less than an inch but it is just over A4 sized and has thick gloosy pages.

In my opinion this should be included as mandatory text book inclusion for any medical student training to be a doctor, nurse or midwife as it could potentially help save a life.

It is also available as an Ebook.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Reference Book 1 Nov 2013

The atlas of developmental field anomalies of the human skeleton, is essentially what it says. It is an atlas of abnormal osteology. Like every anatomical atlas, the book is very pictorial with some texts to explain and elucidate on the anomaly. To understand what is abnormal one must know the normal. The good thing about this book is that it also gives you the normal to enable you compare and appreciate the abnormality that occured. Until I read this book, I did not appreciate the extent of skeletal developmental anomalies there were. This is a good resources for medical students and all interested in this subject, I recommend.

This is a highly detailed book with excellent photographs and line drawings. Its size belies its ability to contain such a rich resource of information on developmental anomalies for the entire skeleton, both pre and post natal as well as adult. This book would be perfect for any healthcare student or practitioner who has or would like to specialise in the skeletal system, or if a knowledge of the system was related closely to their subject specialism such as midwifery or obstetrics. I found the birth defects such as cleft palate and cleft lip absolutely fascinating and the language and illustrations made it very easy to understand. Not a general public text book but definitely one for those with a vested interest. The cost is somewhat hefty even for such an informative book, but for the professional I believe it will pay for itself in terms of its utility.
