About twenty years ago, my wife and I were staying with friends at a remote island resort. The resort was the only place on the island, so we had all our meals at the resort's restaurant. Night after night, our friends ordered steaks, but they passed on the bread and potatoes that came with the steak. Finally I asked them about this, and that's when I first learned about the Atkins diet, which involves limited consumption of carbohydrates to switch the body's metabolism from metabolizing glucose as energy over to converting stored body fat to energy. My wife and I thought that consuming a lot of meat was appealing, but our budget wouldn't allow eating that much steak.

In Go Atkins Without Breaking The Bank, the author briefly describes the theory and science behind the Atkins diet. However, the focus of the book is on proper budgeting and shopping for food. The author recommends having most meals at home, where it's less expensive and easier to control what you're getting in your food (especially avoiding the dreaded "Carb creep"). With the increasing incidence of childhood obesity and early onset of diabetes, he puts special emphasis on children's meals. If you're going to be cooking at home more, you need a good set of cookware and utensils, and these should include a kitchen scale for accurately weighing portions.

Shopping for food is what the book is about, and the author gives some tips on stretching your food budget with the concept of unit pricing to get the most for your dollar. He discusses buying meat and other staples of the Atkins diet. In some cases, buying at volume stores like Costco or Sam's Club, or even buying online may be the most economical way to go. In some areas, local farmers markets are a good source of fresh, lower cost foods. And don't forget coupons, they're often overlooked as a cost-saving practice. The book then addresses which foods and nutrients are most important to maintain good health while on the Atkins diet.

The book could be a valuable resource for anyone on the Atkins diet or who's contemplating it.

Look, I can't lie -- I'm on a budget like anyone else. I have times where I think I'm not, but my bank account begs to differ. :) One thing I like about Mirsad is that he absolutely gets this.

This book is chock full of general advice anyone can use, but there are some neat tips and tricks in it at as well. I never really had anyone break down unit pricing the way Mirsad does. He also knows the Atkins Nutritional Approach like the back of his hand, which I thought was helpful. Everyone needs a refresher, after all. :)

You'll like this book. It's written for regular people, which made me feel more than regular: it made me feel downright super. Thanks, Mirsad.

Mirsad's book covers many of the dieting nightmare issues like
appetite control, lactose intolerance, carb creep, budgeting
and food intolerance. The book discusses grocery shopping,
food storage and integrating the diet with the social life.

There is a good discussion of nutrients like magnesium and Vit D
to help the immune system throughout the year. The Farmer's
Market is a great source for all-natural/organic veggies and
fruits. Spice supplementation is another important area to
compensate for sugar reduction. Mirsad mentions garam
masala with cinnamon, nutmeg and cayenne pepper as excellent

Increasing protein intake is another important step. Good protein
sources are lean beef, chicken, turkey and fish (high in Omega 3).
In addition, protein is a good substitute for carbs or sugar to tame
appetite cravings.

Overall, Go Atkins is helpful in managing the total weight loss
program including the last step which is ongoing maintenance.

I honestly bought this book out of curiosity and the hope that it might help me with the cost of following the Atkins diet plan. And, candidly, it was offered at a great price. . . who can go wrong with a food guide that costs less than $3.00?! I was definitely impressed by the 'wealth' of information contained in this guide! I'm not the only guy in the world watching the bottom line. My wife wishes that we could spend more money some days, but I know that we have more than just one goal on the table, you know? As I look at the Atkins program a bit more, I was thrown off by the amount of money everyone seemed to spend.

Yet Mirsad cuts through all of that crap. You can expect a lean blueprint for success. There's some spices I thought of after reading that are dirt cheap. Time to hit the ethnic food store and explore. Thanks, Mirsad!
