This is the second of Alfred Duggan's books set in Anglo-Saxon times. It is, as ever with Duggan, well read and researched without wandering off into page after page of neat history. It has one major fault to my mind though- I would say that Duggan genuinely reveres the icon that is the Alfred 'the Great' of English national psyche. His laconic understatement in the way he treats Alfred's father and elder brothers gives way to something close to adulation. For me Alfred did not spring off the page and had none of the fallible liveliness of some of his other protagonists. Not bad but not the best Duggan has done!

A very good story, using actual historical facts of the period, plus description of the fighting and battles that took place during the fight against the Vikings/Danes

If a good historical novel is your thing then you will thoroughly enjoy this novel about Alfred the Great.Duggan has a very attractive and rich writing style and provides fast moving but solid and very satisfying reading. Up there with the best of Nigel Tranter. Highly recommended.
