Product Description

Product Description

In this absorbing game, you and your team of Bots are fighting in a tournament to attain the crown of Unreal Grand Master. The teams you will be playing against consist of the most ruthless scum the galaxy has to offer. You will have to be cool under fire and keep your team working effectively if you hope to beat each of Unreal Tournament's 32 levels and come out the champion (or alive, for that matter).

Unreal Tournament's got it all: a ton of amazing levels, exciting new weapons, brain-melting new modes of play (Capture the Flag, Assault Match, Domination Match, Last Man Standing, and--of course--Deathmatch!), unbelievably deadly Bots (computer controlled opponents or team-mates), and a slew of other features that should have your happiness glands working overtime.

Amazon.co.uk Review

First-person combat has never been bloodier or faster paced than in Unreal Tournament, a game that pits you against computer-generated bots or online opponents in a kill-or-be-killed free-for-all. With weapons upgraded from its predecessor, this game offers scores of options for play. Games range from the simple Deathmatch to team options such as Capture the Flag. As the player, you can go it on your own against the toughest the galaxy has to offer or direct a group of hard cases against a similarly well-armed foe. During play you can be fragged (killed) several times, respawning to take up the fight again--though without the rocket launcher or other guns you have carefully stockpiled.

Unreal Tournament has some amazing features, most particularly the tournament maps, which are complex, varied and interesting. Initially a seemingly indecipherable maze loaded with weapons and health boosters, the geography of these spaces begins to make sense as you run from shootout to shootout. After getting fragged a couple of times, smart players will find themselves using these environments to their fullest advantage--ducking down narrow chutes, for example, to leap out on unsuspecting enemies is very satisfying. The playing fields offer hazards of their own, of course--the danger of falling into toxic slime or hard vacuum is always present. Another nice aspect of the game is that online play runs with very little lag, allowing an intense multiplayer experience.

Don't be fooled by the word Tournament in the game title, though--Unreal Tournament has nothing to do with old-style chivalrous combat. Ambushing your enemies, ganging up on them and blasting them to bits from behind is all part of the milieu, and if that's not enough, you can taunt your victims as you blow them away. The bots in the solo player mode have a wide range of nasty, misogynist taunts, even if your character happens to be female. These can be shut off in the options menu, but with the language and the gore this game really lives up to its Mature rating. It may appeal less to women or players looking for sportsmanlike diversion. --Alyx Dellamonica

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of Unreal Tournament 11 Oct 2000
If you have a PC with a modem, and want to get into on-line gaming but don't know where to start, then you should seriously consider getting Unreal Tournament. The box actually claims that no modem or 3D cards are required, but you really need both to get the most out of this game. In fact, if you have a reasonably powerful PC, you will be in for a treat for the senses. The graphics are stunning, with some of the most imaginative level design ever conceived for an FPS. The weapons have suitably gory effects on their lucky recipients (you can adjust the 'gore' level, as well as just about anything else in the game). There are also additional modes such as 'Capture the Flag' and 'Assault' where you can even take part in a latter-day Normandy-Style beach landing, complete with withering machine gun fire and utter confusion surrounding you. The intelligence of the computer-controlled 'bots' is impressive, but the game really comes into its own when you play online. It is a humbling experience to be completely outclassed in your initial forays into this gaming phenomenon, but stick with it, and you will soon be fragging your opponents with regularity. With a wealth of on-line addons currently in existence and growing, the longevity of this game is enhanced considerably. Single player games will never seem the same again once you have experienced the majesty of Unreal Tournament online.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOOK AT THE PRICE!!! 12 Feb 2001
This game is absolutely UNREAL!!!!! unreal by name, unreal by nature, it really is the best 1st person shooter I've had the pleasure to come across. I also own perfect dark and half-life but i gotta say that neither of them come anywhere near UNREAL in terms of visuals, sound, playability or multi-player. Perfect Dark is probably better for a single player game with its objective-driven missions, but for sheer guns 'n' gore this is unbeatable, its just so much damn fun!!!! AND LOOK AT THE FLIPPIN PRICE!!! I've only had it for a few weeks but in that time its been one of the only games ive played, the single player missions dont take too long to complete, but i still come back to play deathmatch, and now i;ve got all-day-internet i can spend any time i'm not at college (most of the time!) playin this on-line! If you like games then you must buy this, if u DONT like games then this is the kinda thing that'll entice you to get into them, so either way - BUT IT NOW!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm on fire 15 Dec 2000
Unreal Tournament is one of the best first person shooters on the PC. It took on id's Quake 3 and in my opinion it won easily. It's fast and furious killing with the addition of team games and capture the flag make it a game you will play for hours without getting bored. It has a huge array of weapons and power-ups and with the option of LAN or online gaming you can play against friends or others on the net. The bots within the game are also fantastic and have a wide range of difficulties - from novice to godlike. You won't complete this game quickly on some of the harder settings. With the inclusion of the assault maps ( where the 2 teams ae against each other to complete an objective ) the game is full of things to master.

5.0 out of 5 stars ULTRA KILL!!!! 19 Dec 2003
This game is one of the best PC games there is. Although you might think it is getting a bit long in the tooth now that it's younger sibling UT2003 has been out for a while and the new baby UT2004 is only just around the corner you would be wrong. Surprisingly this 'original' Unreal Tournament is better than UT2003.
Following on from the old school (and now seriously ancient) single player antics of 'Unreal' with it's limited multiplayer appeal, Unreal Tournament is a multiplayer only affair. There is very little in the way of story to get in the way of the all out action, just a variety of different game modes to win in to become the overall champion.
You don't have to play the game online though, or even play against human opponents at all, the game comes with 'bots', computer controlled characters that can be assigned to play on your team and others to act as the enemy. The 'intelligence' of the bots is excellent. When set to the lower levels of difficulty they act in ways that let you mow them down with no bother, but at the higher levels, especially 'godlike', they provide a very real challenge and will slice and dice you just as effectively as a very good human opponent. One very special feature is the ability to let the bots automatically adjust their skill levels to match how good or bad your playing is. This gives you a fantastic way to develop your ability as a player, and really plays dividends if and when you move on to playing against human opponents.
Although the graphics are not as shiny and new as those in newer games this actually works in your favour by allowing the game to run very fast at good resolutions on an up to date, or even medium specification PC, and with this kind of game, speed is king. Sound wise UT stands up to the new crowd with no sweat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unreal? it sure is 15 Dec 2001
Unreal Tournament is the best online and offline game on the market, smashing Quake 3 and the likes of Halflife. the game concentrates around teamwork and co-operation and is fun and intense, you dont even need a good modem to pay it online.
