Story
Earth's first and best line of defence is its heroes. For generations, brave men and women have answered the call to protect the world from the villains who threaten its safety and security, and that threat is real. Today, organizations such as VIPER, ARGENT and PSI use both superpowers and super technology in their dastardly plots to control the world. In addition, creatures from outer space and other dimensions seek to enslave humanity and super scientist Teleios is creating an army of clones and super powered constructs to do his bidding. But the greatest threat of all is Doctor Destroyer. A superhuman genius driven to conquer, Destroyer will not stop until all of humanity bends knee to his greatness. In 1992, Destroyer obliterated the city of Detroit and killed thousands. With years to prepare, his next attack is sure to put the entire planet in peril. But humanity does not stand alone.

Led by The Champions, protectors of Millennium City, the world's heroes have launched a crusade for peace, security and justice. But they need allies. Defender is calling for a new generation of superheroes to fight in a war against evil that spans the globe - and beyond. Will you be one of those heroes? Save the world and be a champion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not work, but FUN!! 26 Aug 2009
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Other reviewers have already mentioned the disaster of the open beta, however open betas are often accompanied by such events and Cryptic reacted quickly to find solutions so lets move onto the game properly.

I'm a casual gamer. I play maybe ten hours a week and look for games where my son can join in too. Champions has been fantastic for that. character creation is amazing; you have a concept, you can pretty much create it. Great mix of skills and you can just pick from whichever skills area you want; shotguns and magical powers, go for it! Missions are simple and can give you a real feeling of achievement. My son loves that you will often see speech bubbles from bystanders praising you by name. I've read that grouping can be difficult but had no problems in beta. Where it can be difficult is if you are trying to reach a friend by name over a distance. You have to use account and character name which is a bit clunky. While running over about 20 levels I have found two broken quests, although not ideal it is bearable - I've found more than that in games that have been live for months!

Overall, I'd recommend this game to players who are looking for an adventure where they can have fun. You don't need to raid or spend three hours a day harvesting or raising your pvp rankings. You just log on and enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A few bugs but a lot of potential... 25 Aug 2009
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I played open beta from the first day and really like this game.

Of course, there are technical problems (lag) but the gameplay is fine. Bugs will be fixed, bad gameplay probably not.

Things I like:
*) The costume designer is very extensive, it's easy to create a unique looking costume
*) Character feeling is great, you'll feel very powerful
*) Travel powers are absolutely amazing. There are many options to choose from (try "Rocket Jump", my personal favorite)
*) Your hero is very customizable, you can choose your powers from many different powersets.
*) Powers are customizable too, you can choose the color and (if applicable) the emanation point (palm, fist, chest and so on).
*) If you upgrade a power the visual component changes (for different ranks at least)

Things I don't like:
*) There is not much group content currently but I'm sure more will follow
*) The world is instanced. I understand the technical reasons but I don't like it

Sadly I didn't have time to test the crafting system so I can't say anything about it.

Champions Online has a lot of potential, it's up to the developers to utilize it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Public Beta you wont want to pay for 14 Jan 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
For anybody who played City of Heroes or City of Villains, i think you are going to be massively disappointed at this stage.

For a start, graphically the game seems to have gone backwards (from COH/COV) and its frame animation (even in its cartoon-esque style which should be less demanding on your hardware) is woeful even when run on an i7-975 with 2 x HD5970 in x-fire.

The second thing is the complete lack of content. Im not going to spend long ranting, but just look on the forums, 2 days before release, they deliberately reduced the xp you receive in order to slow down the rate that you level up, cos you would run out of content very quickly.

After being a huge fan of City of Heroes and to a lesser extent, City of Villains, i had so much optimism and expectation for this game, but sadly i was disappointed from the word go. For sure, give it 6 months and it will have some more content, but from a graphical perspective and UI perspective, it is a huge backwards step. Bugs and lack of content aside, I cannot adequately describe how disappointed i feel over the poor look and feel of the basics of the game.

For those who didnt play the two other games i mentioned, it has inherited its massive character customisation from those aforementioned titles which was one of the great things (amongst many) about those games as well as the massive social aspect of those games, which were in my opinion far superior to any MMO ive played. However, the implementation of the character customisation in CO is really annoyingly bugged and refuses to acknowledge your mouseclicks, meaning you have to repeatedly scroll through lists again and select, repeat, repeat, repeat 6 or 7 times before it even registers your selection.

Upon installation of the retail pack, i created the account.. then logged in and was greeted with a massive patch to download.. two days later another patch. COH/COV was regularly updated with patches, but the patch sizes, lack of content and bugs i noticed even before id created my character tell me this is a public beta you dont want to pay for.

My advice to anybody is dont bother, for at least 6 months and then only get a demo to test the water. Ive got 28 days of the free time that comes with the game and ill ensure i cancel the account straight away because i want to avoid the automatic credit card renewal.

Woeful.. but being open-minded and fair, i will check back on it in 6months time, but wont hold out too many hopes.

Be warned.
