Book Description

10 May 2012
Adrian Ferrers, Earl of Rivenham, is the most dangerous man in London. Rivenham will let nothing-not even the deepening shadow of war-interfere with his ambition to restore his family to its former glory. But when tasked by the king to uncover a traitor, he discovers instead a conspiracy, and a woman whose courage awakens terrible temptations. To save her is to risk everything. To love her might cost him his life. Lady Sarah Percy knows that Rivenham is the devil in beautiful disguise-and that the dark attraction between them is as dangerous as the nightmare in which her family is trapped. But when war breaks out, she has no choice but to place her trust in her dearest enemy-and hope that love does not become the weapon that destroys them both...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and quite deep 8 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoy Meredith Duran's writing and have read all of her books. This was one of my favourites so far. Her plots are really quite deep and dark, not the usual fluff you get in some historical romance novels. The hero and heroine are both likeable characters battling their own demons and problems and with some seemingly insuperable history keeping them apart. It is set in a troubled time in British history when civil war was imminent and families and friends were split by their religion and their political leanings. A dangerous time to live. I really enjoyed the novel. The love scenes were very sensual but also extremely poignant at times and MD expresses the deep feelings involved very well. I can imagine reading this book many times and still enjoying it. A real keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! 21 April 2012

This book is set in a much earlier period than is usual for this type of story; a very dark period of British history, where intrigue and betrayals within the nobility was a daily risk. Ms Duran has conveyed the period really well and even come up with a dialogue style that seems appropriate to the time, rather than jarring like so many others.

It is an uncomfortable read at times but I found it incredibly absorbing throughout... one of those books where you want to plough on to the end as fast as you can but also don't want it to end. You also wonder how everything can be resolved. The central characters were drawn very well and fully engaged my empathy.

I found it had much more substance than most of its ilk and really enjoyed it.

Of course the cover let the book down... totally inappropriate to the period and the story. Why do publishers do this???

4.0 out of 5 stars Unusual period setting 8 Mar 2013
By Venetia
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It's fairly rare to find a novel set against the '15 - most writers go for the '45 and Bonnie Prince Charlie. I enjoyed the book - as ever with Meredith Duran, there is a high emotional quality, particularly in the first 40%. I took time to warm to the heroine but absolutely adored Adrian.
