Well, probably not. It's still amazing but after buying all 3 5.1 LP's at the same time this was the last to be put on and something of a dissappointment after the other 2. The sounds don't whirl around in quite the same way, they're more static although still wonderful. Also the visualiser is a psychedelic naked dancing woman which is not only substandard compared to the coloured blobs of the other 2 lp's, it also got on the Mrs nerves which doesn't help. Lets face it, if I had to watch a dancing naked man, I'd be less enthused.

The extras are good and their version of Bohemian Rhapsody has to be heard to be believed. How can a band cover something so faithfully yet make it so much more bonkers? I saw them recently and expecting War Pigs to be covered was treated with this song. Never have I been more happier.

Anyway, its still essential but if i had to put them in order of preference (without referring to how much I like the LPs, more based on the experience) it would be Yoshimi first, then soft bulletin, then this.

I've never been able to pick my favourite stereo LP though so perhaps fans should go for the one they like best.

zaireeka 2.0 8 Jan 2007
Format:Audio CD
I really wasn't sold on this album... until I got a surround sound system. God knows if it was entirely intentional, I'm not the most technologicaly minded person, but it seems this album was created with surround sound as a focal point. To me it's just as effective, if not even more so, than Zaireeka. Maybe I'm biased because I just wanted something to show off my new sound system but by god, from what I've got available to me, this truly shines.

A Great Thing Just Got Better 4 Nov 2006
By J. Nelson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Chances are you already own At War With the Mystics. Chances are you love it. So, you're probably wondering is it worth double dipping and buying this new DVD/CD combo.

The answer is: Yes

The 5.1 mix is worth the price alone, but you also get a nice collection of bonus material. You get videos, alternate versions and even new radio sessions.

Not only do you get all of that, but you also get the album on CD. Now you can give your old copy to a friend and you not only give the gift of the Flaming Lips, but you also look like a super nice person. You can't lose!

Worth it. 12 Jan 2007
By E. Hazeldene - Published on Amazon.com

I suspect most people considering purchasing this are already fans of At War with the Mystics, and probably wondering if the 5.1 dvd is worth the money, even if you have the CD. It truly is.

The sound is brilliant, the high quality surround sound really does affect the songs. Each listen you will find bits you didn't hear on the CD, in some cases because they've been 'brought forward' and in some cases because they didn't previously exist on the CD album. iI brings the whole album to life and gives all the tracks an extra depth. Tracks like "The W.A.N.D" and "Yeah Yeah Yeah Song" are, unbelievably perhaps, even more fun! I think a key track on this is "Pompeii am Gotterammerdung" (forgive my spelling if I've got that wrong), which is much more intense on this CD.

The booklet also makes this a wonderful package, it's got a lot of information in it, mostly written by lead singer Wayne Coyne. There is a breakdown of each of the tracks meanings, and also a description of what's different for each track on this album in comparison to the CD, which is a really interesting little read. For example, if I remember correctly, in "Pompeii...", actual recordings of a volcano are used!?

Also worth noting is the bonus tracks, including covers and 'remixes' (or at least strange versions of known songs) although sadly most of these are not in 5.1 sound, however they are of course still high quality. Thankfully their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody is in 5.1!!

If you like the album, I would definitely recommend buying this DVD, it will be a welcome addition to your collection.

If you're considering buying the album as a first you might as well go for this package as it has the CD included also.

Reivewing the DVD because... 3 Sep 2010

That's probably what you are curious about if you are looking at this package. I bought this combination myself after upgrading my receiver and speakers to a surround system, and boy am I happy.

The Flaming Lips have taken what was already a great album and made it surround sound, and if you know the Flaming Lips, they are fantastic in surround. The DVD is fantastic and adds a lot to the music that was otherwise not very accessible in the original CD mix. The biggest improvement is in the depth provided by the audio. This is probably a given in the surround sound world, but it really seems to stand out in the best releases, and this is one of them.

Additionally, the Flaming Lips seem to have taken the surround sound concept to a level that some might call bit of a novelty with the effects they have used. There is panning here and there. There are sound affects added that add more to the depth, and many other features that are helpfully outlined in the booklet included. While I generally dislike it when people take surround effects a bit too far, as could be the case on this album, the Flaming Lips did a good job in complementing the music, and it is obvious that there is a reasoning behind each choice made. It doesn't hurt that this album (and a few of the other Flaming Lips albums) are part of a modern psychedelic style that lend themselves well to surround sound (just like some 60's and 70's albums by Hendrix, Pink Floyd, et al. would).

The video on the DVD is a bit interesting and really doesn't do much for the whole package. It isn't a complaint as much as just a notice for those who might expect more out of a DVD (the audio comes first here). The bonus content is pretty good though although I have to say that the high school graduation speech included is a bit strange (but worth a listen one time around).

The booklet is fantastic as I mentioned before. It is worth reading at some point while listening to the DVD. In some regards it helps to describe the effects, but more importantly it sometimes explains the idea behind the effects. It really is interesting to see all you can into the mind of Wayne Coyne and his band mates.
