A high water point for 1960"s Bud Powell performances... 8 Nov 2011
By Henry B. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Bud had just been released from a stay at a Swiss hospital, and he decided to embark on a Scandanavian tour, arriving at the famed Golden Circle club in Stockholm April 19, 1962. Accompanying Bud are Torbjorn Hultcrantz on bass and Sune Spangerg on drums, who look like they are in their early 20s in the pic on the back of the liner notes, and they provide good support but rest assured that the focus on this one is ALL BUD, who solos almost constantly and is fresh, inventive and taking chances all the way. Bud plays very long and lucid solos, fluid and intelligent and swinging, like the Bud of the 1940s and early 50s. He is in rare form, particularly for this later period of his life-- the rest in Switzerland must have done him a LOT of good. Typical for Steeplechase, they get the song list AND the times of the cuts wrong on the back of the CD, but it's correct on the CD itself: 1. Swedish Pastry 2. There Will Never Be Another You 3. Move 4. Just a Gigolo 5. Relaxin' at Camarillo (perhaps recuperative hospital stays were on his mind?) 6. I Remember Clifford 7. Reets and I . #4 is the only one that very short, all the rest are between 5 to 9 minute romps each-- every one is a gem, just wonderful playing throughout, for 53 minutes of sheer joy. This disc really dispels the notion that this great, sensitive artist was only a shadow of his former self towards the end of his life-- 90% of the pianists out there today WISH they could play at the level that Bud is at on this recording. Grab a ringside seat at the Golden Circle, sit back and picture yourself at a table in the club seeing the great Bud Powell in 1962 -- the fidelity is quite good and permits your imagination to go there. Highly recommended.
