Biography

The Kinks were formed by brothers Ray and Dave Davies in their hometown of Muswell Hill, North London. The brothers began playing skiffle and rock and roll, recruiting Peter Quaife to play bass with them. By the summer of 1963, as The Ravens, they'd recruited drummer Mickey Willet. Eventually their demo tape reached American record producer Shel Talmy who helped the band land a contract ... Read more in Amazon's The Kinks Store

CD Description

The Kinks and the BBC are celebrated on this limited edition collector’s 5 CD and DVD set, The Kinks Live at the BBC.

The release is collated from all of the BBC-owned Kinks recordings that still exist in the archive and charts the inexorable rise of the band; from the first steps on the Pye label, to their glory days as one of the world’s most successful bands. The BBC gave the band a platform and support at crucial stages in their career and The Kinks at the BBC plays like an alternate Greatest Hits, a musical growing up in public.

This incredible archive represents a fantastic set of previously unreleased recordings from the Kinks’ catalogue. The collection has been brought together by trawling the BBC archives, but also by inviting contributions from fans. The BBC had a habit of wiping tapes after they were broadcast which has meant that some of the Corporation’s output has been lost for ever. However, thanks to fans recording broadcasts at home a lot of gems have been reclaimed here for this set.

The box set also comes with a DVD of the band’s sought-after appearances on Top of the Pops and the Old Grey Whistle Test, as well as concerts from throughout the band’s career. This is a first for the band as these recordings have never been available in one place before. Comprehensive notes are provided by Peter Doggett, who tells the story of the band's history at the BBC, and Kinks aficionado Andrew Sandoval is behind the mastering.

Fully supported and endorsed by the band, The Kinks at the BBC is a triumphant collection of the defining moments of a truly seminal British band, as witnessed, broadcast and archived by the voice of the nation, the BBC.

5.0 out of 5 stars God Save The Kinks! 23 Aug 2012
Format:Audio CD
Not through the whole thing yet, but I've listened to the first two discs twice and disc three right now and they are incredible. I've been a fan for 40 years and this box is like a gift from God. I've always been amazed at how Ray was able to write lyrics that sure didn't sound like a 24-year-old guy; more like an old man looking back on his life.

Of course, this set renders the 2001 BBC Sessions double-disc obsolete, in the nicest possible way. Even the fact that some of the songs turn up several times over the box just gives one another chance to revel in the genius of these songs and Mr. Ray Davies.

A must for Kinks fans!

BTW, Ray recently told Mojo Magazine that this box is just the tip of the iceberg of unreleased stuff to come. I'll believe it when I see them, but it definitely sounds like there's gonna be more stuff in the pipeline for us Kinks Kollectors to look forward to.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Kinks at the BBC 25 Sep 2012
By Chris
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you are a fan of the Kinks this is a must have!! This was meticulously put together the sound is amazing, there is a lot of exclusive material, great live concerts, BBC recorded tracks, interviews, etc. It spans 30 years of the Kinks career!! It also has a DVD that contains performances that for the most part are not repeated on the cds (except for the Christmas concert). More box sets should be put out with this much care. If you are thinking about this I would act fast because I don't think it will stay in print long as not many(from my understanding) were pressed. This is sure to be a collector's item!
