Product Description

Product Description

Amy Winehouse At The BBC is a four-disc collection chronicling the many remarkable performances by Amy Winehouse for the BBC. Spread across three DVDs and one CD, this comprehensive collection captures the strong and enduring relationship that Amy enjoyed with the BBC.

The special edition box set includes Amy’s earliest BBC Radio sessions, her first ever TV performances, as well as candid interviews, rarely seen footage, unheard gems, rarities, unique covers and live versions of classic songs from Frank and Back To Black. The set also includes a beautifully illustrated booklet featuring rare photographs, a deeply touching appreciation from her friend, rap superstar Nas, extensive sleeve notes by the Sunday Times Culture’s Dan Cairns as well as the thoughts of BBC producer Mark Cooper who worked closely with Amy on many of the highlights of the set.

Disc 1 is a DVD selection of recordings chosen by Later presenter, songwriter and musician Jools Holland, Disc 2 is a 14-song audio selection dating from 2004 to 2009, while Disc 3 features Amy’s memorable Porchester Hall sessions. “Amy Winehouse – The Day She Came to Dingle” (Disc 4), perhaps the centrepiece of the box set, is a short film featuring a fascinating interview with the artist intercut with Amy, at the height of her powers, delivering an electrifying 20 minute live performance recorded in December 2006 in a tiny church.

BBC Review

In her tragically short career, Amy Winehouse filmed and recorded many sessions for the BBC. Enough to ensure that this release – available as a single CD and DVD set, and as a box-set comprising three DVDs and one CD – stands as an alternative Best Of, showcasing her skills as a live performer.

In case anyone was left in any doubt, the CD featuring 14 performances proves, again, that we have lost the pre-eminent vocal talent of her generation. Compiled from performances at festivals and recordings specifically for TV and radio dating from 2004 to 2009, these gems also prove that Winehouse’s voice did not decline gradually, even as addictions were taking control of her life and taking their toll on her fragile body.

The two finest tracks here date from 2009. Just Friends is performed in that late-60s rocksteady reggae style that she and her excellent band perfected. It’s followed by a stripped-down take on Love Is a Losing Game, in which Amy picks through the rubble of broken love like a child through a bombsite, but with an entirely adult sense of timing and emphasis that evinces her growing power as an interpretive vocalist.

These recordings contrast perfectly with the grandstanding, acid-jazzish performances from 2004, when she was still young and carefree enough to want to show off. By 2009, her only desire was to serve the emotional devastation of her words.

The set ends with an intimate 2006 version of To Know Him Is to Love Him, The Teddy Bears’ classic that provided one of the inspirations for the modernised girl-group soul of Back to Black. From Amy’s mouth, a teen melodrama becomes a quietly wracked testament to her masochistic relationship with love – a trait that played every bit as much of a part in her downfall as drugs or booze.

It is beautiful and bereft and hard to listen to with easy joy – as are much of the best of these essential recordings.

As much as Amy was a mess of a person she was an amazing artist. I'm a middle aged man who doesn't really enjoy or get into much current music but she was different. I am so happy I sent to the UK for this set. Over here we got the CD and the Dingle DVD which was great but the extra concert DVD and the Jools Holland tribute DVD were big bonuses and all will be watched over and over. This is timeless music by a timeless artist. I can recommend this collection without reservation to any fan. For non fans curious I would not start here.... but even that wouldn't be bad. A lot of music and just an exceptional talent.

How can you pay tribute the best way?
Just put together complete concert never before released, add one of the best live performances on BBC shows, add audio CD with rare live performances and unreleased tracks, complete it with unique package with lots of photos and additional information...
And you'll find it all in BBC tribute to one of the greatest artist of all time - Amy Winehouse...

At first, I was tentative that this would be yet another cash-in on a deceased legend. But no, this boxset is superb!

The DVDs are heartbreaking to watch - the shy, gamine, pretty girl evolves into a sweary, grossly-tatooed, over made-up world-weary crooner with a ridiculous beehive. But what a voice! What feeling! The bonus ball for me was the CD - it blows "Lioness" into the water! Amy was the spiritual (and temporal) heir(ess) of Sarah Vaughan and Bessie Smith. And the "Arena" DVD is so wonderfully sad - Amy is so humble, apologises for being late(!), discusses her plans for Christmas and expouses on her relatively recent passion for jazz, all thanks to her brother playing Ray Charles in the next bedroom!

And thankfully, no distracting Mitch, Mark Ronson or assorted "partners" are filmed - just Amy and her fabulous musicians. A treat!

Finally got to watch the DVDs. I have seen most of the material on TV, but the transfers are superb, especially from the BBC HD material. Better than some Blu-rays I have seen.
As others have said, it is sad to see the change from the early Amy, who was a really pretty girl, to the tattooed and beehived sight she became. The Dingle performance and interview showed she had not changed so much at that time.

Well produced album, lovely sound makes you feel like you your there!
DVD "s good quality just be prepared that Amy starts to get a bit tipsy towards the end and does make you feel bit uncomfortable towards the end, the day she came to dingle is just Amy at her best, just lovely. All real fans of Amy"s music will love this as she just was such a good musician/lyricist . A joy to own

If you're an Amy Winehouse fan, this is a wonderful DVD/CD set to have. Amy was human; her music was something else ...... (any word(s) used wouldn't do her music justice). I along with many others are saddened knowing that we will never hear new songs, but that doesn't mean we can't treasure and be grateful for what she left behind.

She was a great artist that never lived to her real potential which makes the work of those who do that much more special.

It was a real loss to the world of music when Amy died so any new recordings (especially official releases are to be welcomed). Generally I have had good luck with BBC related releases but the product quality on this expensive package is exceptionally poor. Straight out of the box, 2 of the 3 DVD discs have digital flaws in places (the picture deconstructs), I don't know enough about the manufacture of DVD discs to know if this is a problem specific to my discs or would affect all purchases. Given the price and the quality of the packaging, it would be have been nice if the actual discs were viewable. As for the music, there are some real gems here (I am a fan of live music) even though there are a limited number of songs. Amy's voice is generally exquisite but her visible discomfort in some of the later performances is disturbing at times.
