Cracking thriller!, 27 Jun 2011
This is the author's second book, and although it takes a completely different direction from 'Beneath Gray Skies', it's a thriller which sets an amazing pace, with twists and turns in every chapter. After a seemingly innocent encounter with a businessman, Ken Sharpe's life turns into a nightmare of ever increasing complexity. The reader is left wondering who can be trusted, and who cannot. The sense of menace is ever present, right through to the final pages. As well as being an extremely accomplished thriller, with a complex plot, this book offers a fascinating insight into everyday life and culture in Japan, which I found very interesting. I await Hugh Ashton's next book with bated breath!

An involving thriller, 23 Oct 2011
This review is from: At the Sharpe End (Paperback)
This is a very gripping read - I was absorbed in it almost to the end. The background in Japan is very interesting, and although some of the plot involves complicated financial stuff, it was well-explained and I could keep up. Some of the action is a bit grisly but this adds to the plot, and the characters were believable, with some humorous insights into their motivations. Towards the end I felt there was at least two too many twists in the plot. By the last 3 or so chapters, I could no longer work out who was on the side of the angels and who wasn't - and, worse, I had stopped caring! I think it should have finished a bit sooner.

Author's synopsis and video, 23 Aug 2010
This review is from: At the Sharpe End (Paperback)
Length:: 2:29 Mins
When his business card is found in the pocket of a man who has died under the wheels of a train at Shinjuku station in Tokyo, British expat Kenneth Sharpe's life takes a turn for the worse. A freelance technology consultant usually has no business with burglary, kidnapping or murder, not to mention the overthrow of governments, but these all rapidly become disturbingly familiar parts of his life. The stakes start high, and rise higher, as Sharpe and his friends take on the might of the financial world against the backdrop of the 2008 Wall Street collapse, and the ruin of the global financial markets. This is my second published novel, following Beneath Gray Skies. The video is my promotional video for the book, which shows off some of Tokyo, and will hopefully bring back memories for those who have lived there, and be of interest to those who haven't.
