Review

‘Effortlessly hooks the reader. This mix of John Fowles-cum-Ian McEwan turns flammable.’ Guardian, on The Amethysts

‘A psychological thriller as harrowing as it is absorbing… powerful, almost poetic prose style… always intense, emotional and uninhibited. This novel may prove unforgettable.’ Sunday Telegraph, on The Amethysts

‘The build-up of menace is deft and convincing… something exceptional and utterly gripping.’ Daily Telegraph, on Pearl

‘Delaney has skilfully concocted a blend of adventure thriller and psychological mystery.’ The Times, on Pearl

THE AMETHYSTS 'The fusillade of shocks and the crescendo of menace and confusion are contrived brilliantly. The pace rarely flags. Taut, tense and full of threatening emotional power.' Daily Telegraph 'Effortlessly hooks the reader. This mix of John Fowles-cum-Ian McEwan turns flammable.' Guardian 'A psychological thriller as harrowing as it is absorbing ... powerful, almost poetic prose style ... always intense, emotional and uninhibited. This novel may prove unforgettable.' Sunday Telegraph PEARL 'The build-up of menace is deft and convincing ... something exceptional and utterly gripping.' Daily Telegraph 'A taut, fast-moving thriller with a neatly wrought ending.' Irish Independent 'Delaney has skilfully concocted a blend of adventure thriller and psychological mystery.' The Times

This is not the sort of book I would usually read, but I came across The Amethysts on holiday and realised I had discovered a series of thrillers with real, believable, attractive characters. I was entranced. Beautifully written, gripping and tender, in Nicholas Newman Frank Delaney has created a protagonist with flaws, fears and neurosis, who is also an aesthete and brilliant architect. Written in the first person, the reader is totally involved in his every thought and it is this that makes these books impossible to put down. Nicholas is not another James Bond character. He is troubled by a difficult past and a daunting future, but he is totally compelling, and I can't wait to read more of him. After The Amethysts, I read Pearl. I had to buy At Ruby's in hardback. Not only are these books beautifully written, with wonderful backgrounds exquisitely described, but they are thumping good reads as well. I can't recommend this series highly enough. By Kate Morandi

Forced and Superficial 13 July 2004
Format:Paperback
I found this book forced and the psychology totally unbelievable. The character of Nicholas Newman is written entirely from the outside and the female characters are artificial, as if the writer has no intuitve grasp of female psychology. Delaney writes as if he thinks he is a great writer, with irritating turns of phrase or choices of vocabulary put in for effect rather than any natural relevence. The ending is particularly poor.

I felt this book was rubbish, having read lots of Frank Delanleys works I really can not believe he would think this was any good,I,ll say no more.
