4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly bitter-sweet ghost story 7 Nov 2012

Here we have a short story (ok, at 109 pages, maybe not technically a short story but it reads so fast!) that seems like the typical, vengeful ghost story, then (most pleasantly) turns out not to be so typical.
A mass murder, a haunted old farmhouse and a young couple ghost hunting. How do you stop the ghost that want's to kill everyone, again? That is the question. This also manages to have True Love. This, unfortunately, doesn't save the day. But, this isn't a romance or a fairy tale, instead it is a suspenseful ghost story written by two masters of the horror (suspense, not slash and gore) genre.
Got to the bitter-sweet ending and was tempted to sniffle. This is the type of story that seems to plant itself in your mind and come back to visit on occasion. Even if you only read it once.

4.0 out of 5 stars History, Romance, Ghosts...a Quick but Great Read! 14 Dec 2012

This is a very short story that could have been a bigger book. I can actually envision this one becoming an excellent movie. History, romance, ghosts...

Having read several Swartwood books in the past month, I have gotten used to his cadence and his unique combination of wit, sarcasm, and terror. This story threw me a bit, and I think it was the addition of another author's voice. Honestly, I would love to see what Swartwood would have done with this story on his own.

In a small number of pages, this story manages to work up a fantastic amount of suspense. It has all the backbone of a classic horror story, and there are so many directions it could have taken. Don't get me wrong...this is a GREAT read and a solid story, but it feels like a condensed version of something that could be legendary.
