Biography

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Cyndi Lauper was one of the biggest stars of the early MTV era, selling five million copies of her debut album, She's So Unusual, as well as scoring a string of four Top Ten hits from the record, including the major hits "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Time After Time." Lauper's thin, girlish voice and gleefully ragtag appearance became one of the most distinctive… Read more in Amazon's Cyndi Lauper Store

I am absolutely astonished by ms. Cyndi Lauper's wonderful interpretations of these songs. She even made me love La vie en rose and unchained melody - songs I didn't appreciate much before, but she sings with such emotion, it's amazing.

"At Last" is the album that has finally made the masses realise what an incredible singer this woman is. I am known for being a huge fan and some of my friends dismiss her as a novelty act from the 80's. I have exposed them to this CD and the response has been universal. The main comment has been about what a wonderful singer she is and how surprised they are.

I host a program on a community radio station each week. I have been playing songs from "At Last" and the reaction has been amazing. When I played "Stay", I had people asking who it was singing (they loved it). Other presents who were at the station stopped talking and started listening, then singing. "Hymn to Love" garnered phone calls about what a beautiful song it was. In fact, each track has received a postive reaction.

The CD displays Cyndi vocal talents to the full. The musical arrangements are stripped back to basics (not overproduced thank goodness). Her voice is so full of emotion, I not only hear her sing the songs but I can feel her singing them.

Go and buy "At Last".

If you wonder where Cyndi has been since the 80's, go and purchase "Hat Full Of Stars" (1993), "Sisters Of Avalon" (1996) and "Shine" (2002). She has been producing fantastic music since the 80's. There just wasn't much publicity about it.

Cyndi grew up in Manhattan, which was (and probably still is) a melting pot, where music from a variety of sources could be heard within a very small area. Inevitably, these diverse influences shaped Cyndi's own musical career, but with this album she has returned to her roots and recorded a selection of the songs that she heard back then. The resulting album is very satisfying to my ears.

Most if not all of these songs were around in the sixties though some are older. There is a trio of songs of French origin (La vie en rose, If you go away, Hymn to love) and plenty of R+B (At last, Stay, Until you come back to me, My baby just cares for me, Don't let me be misunderstood). Of course, Glenn Miller had the original hit with At last, but Etta James made the song her own and I suspect Cyndi grew up with Etta's version. Cyndi recorded the Motown song You've really got a hold on me with just one musician (albeit he plays three instruments) so the way it appears here, it's not R+B, but I love it. Meanwhile Cyndi has turned On the sunny side of the street (which I normally come across on easy listening albums) into an R+B rocker. Cyndi didn't do anything surprising with Walk on by or Unchained melody, by they also sound great.

Some people don't like cover versions but I do, though of course there are exceptions. There are no exceptions here as Cyndi recorded a truly magnificent album.

Stick to the day job, Cyndi
Cyndi Lauper's 'true colours' are brilliant - a talented artist, with a unique voice and many great songs to her credit, but this 'back to the roots' offering is just terrible. Read more
