What a bargain! Four great albums, a ton of terrific music, Culture at Joe Gibbs is highly recommended. I bought it and I already have two of the albums ("Two Sevens Clash" and "Baldhead Bridge", both of which are excellent by the way). This budget-priced box set includes the rare "More Culture", which was worth the price of admission on its own to this fan. This album has the excellent song "Innocent Blood", which appeared on similarly rare "Africa Stand Alone", a heart-wrenching telling of the story of Jamaican national hero George William Gordon. The lyrics of this song are particularly strong as it tells the tale of a rebel for all seasons who "because he did such a good" was hung "with his eye-glass on". The production here though is more decorative, a real bells and whistles job from Joe Gibbs in contrast to the stark roots style of the ASL version. All the songs are strong however, including the catchy "White Belly Rats" and the plaintive "More Vacancy". The other album that I didn't have before as a great collection of rare singles from the period, including dubs and toasts. If you haven't heard it before, you really need "Two Sevens Clash". It is one of the great albums of all time, not just a great reggae album but among the greatest of all musical forms. From the thrilling start of "Calling Rastafari" to the anthemic finale of "Natty Dread Taking Over", the singing and the music are top drawer and it is all wrapped up in the real luxurious Gibbs production job. For some Joe Gibbs' production may be too over the top but noone can argue that it doesn't suit the material on this classic album. Great songs like "See Them A Come", "I'm Not Ashamed", "Two Sevens Clash" and "I'm Alone In The Wilderness" make this an album to conjure with.Read more ›

Good value box set. Exceptional value, actually.
Packaging is nothing to write home about (cardboard sleeves and box) but is slim and ecologically sound!

A good variety of tunes and all very well produced! -It's great to enjoy such vintage numbers with CLARITY, sounding really cris(p).

I'd never heard of Joe Gibbs but there are some familiar styles here from the various artistes.

Classic 70's reggae with the trademark production soulful and righteous vocals ,killer hypnotic baselines and some fire and brimstone salvation. What more do you need?

a time capsule of pure excellence, a little box (beautifully packaged) containing the fruits of culture's most creative period. the first 3 albums, including the god-like 'two sevens clash', and a further disc of associated material, form, what is more or less a compact history. for an even more complete picture, buy 'culture and the deejays' along with this. i am not sure if a dub collection from this era is available, as this would be more than welcome for the completist.
