This album is a big and, in parts, unwelcome step away from the "serious" jazz of Port Of Call and towards "easy listening" stuff. That said, it is at least of exceptional quality throughout, with Silje's soft voice and quirky accent enough to win plenty of fans.
The songs span a good variety of thematic styles: "Two Sleepy People" is sweet "Keep On Backing Losers" defiant; whilst musical genres veer from jazz and blues to a calypso feel.
Stand out tracks on this album are "Japanese Blue", which mixes traditional Far Eastern instrumentation with a jazz sensibility to great effect, and "Lullaby To Erle", dedicated to her young daughter, which does the same thing for love songs. But the greatest song, which was also released as a single, is unquestionably "Be Still My Heart", which begins with one of those rare arresting introductions that demands the listener's whole attention and then builds to a breathtaking climax. Wonderful.
Don't be put off by the "Norwegian Britney Spears of jazz" epithet; this is unfair. Silje is a more mature singer, not to mention an excellent songwriter.
Be Still My Heart is nice, but Japanese Blue is the highlight of the album for me. Why don't more people experiment with Eastern instruments like this? Perhaps I'm just listening to the wrong music.
As to those who complain about her accent, I think it's kind of cute.
"It's as plain as the noossssse on yur face..."
