Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

At First Light presents Norway's jazz answer to Britney Spears in a narrow stylistic ambit that is informed more by backward glances to 60s casual music than jazz, pop, rock or soul/funk. This is music that can safely be played in airports and can accompany intimate evenings over a good bottle of wine in a riverside penthouse. Nergaard has written around two-thirds of the material here (lyrics by Mike McGurk) and it is all ingratiatingly well joined-up. Her choice of covers includes "Let There Be Love", "Two Sleepy People" and "Blame It On The Sun", but she brings little of character to the songs, preferring to blend them into her overall chilled-out approach. The instrumental arrangements are well-mannered, transparent and spare, her regular piano-bass-drums acoustic trio supplemented here and there by a small brass section, or a solo guitar or (on occasions) a string and horn section. The sleeve artwork is smart and minimal: attractive in its own up-to-the-moment designer way--as is the album. --Keith Shadwick

5.0 out of 5 stars a norwegian gem 27 May 2002
Format:Audio CD
The simple arrangements on this cd makes it perfect music to chill out to. It contains 3 covers and 9 original compositions with the classic Stevie Wonder song "Blame it on the Sun" being the pick of the covers. The stand out original track is undoubtedly "Be still my Heart" with the Rick Bruan like trumpet solo by the German Till Bronner being a particular highlight. Fans of Stacey Kent will love this cd.

Silje has put together another wonderful collection of tracks, most of which she wrote herself (with her Scottish lyricist Mike McGurk) and a few of which are covers of classic jazz standards. She again teams up with her regular band, the phenomenal Tord Gustavsen Trio, a band whose subtlety is most evident without a vocalist but nonetheless very welcome as accompaniment here.

This album is a big and, in parts, unwelcome step away from the "serious" jazz of Port Of Call and towards "easy listening" stuff. That said, it is at least of exceptional quality throughout, with Silje's soft voice and quirky accent enough to win plenty of fans.

The songs span a good variety of thematic styles: "Two Sleepy People" is sweet "Keep On Backing Losers" defiant; whilst musical genres veer from jazz and blues to a calypso feel.

Stand out tracks on this album are "Japanese Blue", which mixes traditional Far Eastern instrumentation with a jazz sensibility to great effect, and "Lullaby To Erle", dedicated to her young daughter, which does the same thing for love songs. But the greatest song, which was also released as a single, is unquestionably "Be Still My Heart", which begins with one of those rare arresting introductions that demands the listener's whole attention and then builds to a breathtaking climax. Wonderful.

Don't be put off by the "Norwegian Britney Spears of jazz" epithet; this is unfair. Silje is a more mature singer, not to mention an excellent songwriter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mmmm, nice. 5 Mar 2003
Format:Audio CD
This is a very chill album, although some of the songs are so catchy it will drive you potty. I'm a bit frightened to listen to it lest they go on my brain again.

Be Still My Heart is nice, but Japanese Blue is the highlight of the album for me. Why don't more people experiment with Eastern instruments like this? Perhaps I'm just listening to the wrong music.

As to those who complain about her accent, I think it's kind of cute.

"It's as plain as the noossssse on yur face..."
