Book Description

28 Nov 1991
At 7:53 a.m., December 7, 1941, America's national consciousness and confidence were rocked as the first wave of Japanese warplanes took aim at the U.S. Naval fleet stationed at Pearl Harbor. As intense and absorbing as a suspense novel, At Dawn We Slept is the unparalleled and exhaustive account of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. It is widely regarded as the definitive assessment of the events surrounding one of the most daring and brilliant naval operations of all time. Through extensive research and interviews with American and Japanese leaders, Gordon W. Prange has written a remarkable historical account of the assault that-sixty years later-America cannot forget.

From the Author

We believe that this remains the definitive work on Pearl H.
We have continued to research this subject. As of September 1998, our conclusions remain unchanged after eighteen years. We will continue to look at recently released documents from archives in Russia and England and update when necessary.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Pearl Harbor Account 12 May 1999
By A Customer
Gordon Prange has written an in-depth, comprehensive account of the Pearl Harbor attack in his book At Dawn We Slept. Mr. Prange and his associates Mr. Goldstein and Ms. Dillon spent years researching the events leading up to the attack, the attack itself, and the subsequent investigations. Many Pearl Harbor "myths" are destroyed in this book, such as the "winds" message and the belief that Roosevelt knew that Pearl Harbor was going to be attacked. This book is the measuring stick by which all other Pearl Harbor books are measured.

If you wanted to know anything about the Pearl Harbor attack by the Japanese, or what started it, or what followed it, this book offers the most comprehensive account. The reporting is meticulous from both the American and Japanese positions. The author must have been a "fly on the wall" at both Japanese headquarters and aboard their ships, as well as at the Pentagon, Roosevelt's office, and at Pearl Harbor, since there is no other way to account for the rich day to day detail that he provides the reader. This is a most thorough account; whatever questions the reader had about Pearl Harbor before reading this book are definitely answered. Great history with very alive characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling history of an infamous day 11 Nov 2005
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I first read this book as part of my research into a secondary school project. I believe it to be the most accurate and in-depth record of this attack.
It can get confusing as the time-line jumps back and forth between events, but is still THE work to use as a reference.
If books aren't your thing, then the docu/film "Tora Tora Tora" is to be watched as the author of this book was consulted extensively in the filming of it.
