Book Description

3 Aug 2012
Feel the need for speed with Asymmetric Sailing Asymmetric sails have revolutionized the sport of sailing but require a special set of skills. Now you can learn the secrets of getting the most from your boat--whether you sail an entry level dinghy, high performance skiff, sportsboat or catamaran. This is the first book to be dedicated to the subject of sailing with asymmetric spinnakers There’s step-by-step guidance and step-by-step colour photos throughout. Every stage of asymmetric sailing is covered including:
• Rigging and tuning
• Hoists, gybes and drops
• Tactics
• Solo and crewed
• Survival sailing
• Advanced skills
Tips, advice and some great shortcuts from expert sailors in a wide range of classes give you the inside knowledge to get ahead of the fleet. In fact the acknowledgments page reads like a who’s-who of asymmetric sailing with Olympic medalists, world champions, leading coaches and designers sharing their skills. Not that author Andy Rice lacks credentials having won a 49er national championship and sailed with such greats as John Merricks, Ian Walker and Simon Hiscocks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book 22 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is the book that I wish had been available when I bought my Devoti D-One two years ago. It is so comprehensive, covering every aspect of boat handling; helming; crewing; trapezing; racing; strategy; and advanced skills. As well as a general explanation of each aspect there are really useful practical tips as well throughout the book. Each section is lavishly illustrated with clear, well captioned photographs. Several of these are sequences showing hoists; gybing; etc. which help to expand on the relevant sections in the book. As well as Andy's clear and concise explanations there are contributions from expert sailors. This is a superb book and I strongly recommend it to any asymmetric sailor or to anyone who is considering sailing or purchasing an asymmetric boat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb! 7 Jun 2014
By DavidS
Format:Paperback
A really good comprehensive book that explains how to get the best out of your asymmetric dinghy. Loads of colour photos and interviews with top sailors from various classes are excellent. For example, the right technique in an RS200 will not be the same as in a 49er or Musto Skiff, so this book uses the interviews and insets to help explain the specifics, without muddying the waters.

Absolutely essential reading for anybody moving into an asymmetric dinghy for the first time, but also loads of good tips for more experienced sailors. Five stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential guide to boat handling 11 Jan 2014
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
One of the only modern boat handling books targeted at club racers, this book doesn't try to cover all aspects of a race badly as many do, but covers boathandling exclusively very very well.

If you sail a fast asymmetric dinghy this is the essential guide to boat handling. It covers tacking and gybing, in light wind, medium and strong winds, as well as hoists and drops and breaks down each maneuver into simple steps with clear pictures using modern dinghies.
I've used it's methods and breakdowns of maneuvers for coaching RS100's, 200's, 400's and 800's at Minorca sailing and it's helped me coach good sailors (as well as myself) how to do that gybe in 25knts perfectly every time.
