3.0 out of 5 stars A Okay Scary Movie. 10 Nov 2008
Format:DVD
I watched this last night and thought it was a scary movie but was let down by a slow begining. It starts with two young children seeing their father shooting himself after hearing voices, then one of the kids grows up and goes to university after the sudden death of her brother. As she mixes with the other students, they find out that their dorm is a old asylum with a mad doctor touturing the young teens but they soon get their revenge. But now, he has returned for more suffering and out for the kill. Yes, it's pretty gory and scary with the doctor's black eyes and horrid nails with him but it's a another movie with no-one you know in it and very staged acting. It's okay, not great and not terrible but don't expect any standout moments.

By J. Ody
Format:DVD
The biggest problem with this movie is the unoriginality of the story. The writer, Ethan Lawrence, normally writes for tv series, so coupled with director David R Ellis whose previous film was the awful Snakes On A Plane, it was never good from the start. Still, a synopsis of young beautiful teens staying in a campus/house that used to be a mental asylum has been done to the death: Buried Alive, Death Tunnel, House On Haunted Hill, even the film Mirrors. Of course all of these were done better...

The film isn't sure what genre it's in, going from eerie supernatural for the most part, to being a Freddie/Jason stalk and slash in places which doesn't work. The doctor is meant to be a ghost, however each scene with him is poor albeit the kill scenes have pretty good effects. The supernatural scenes just aren't filled with suspense, nor are there any jump out moments.

Lead Sarah Roemer is good, but then having been the supporting role in Disturbia, this isn't surprising. The other `teens' fit into the usual stereotypes for these movies apart from a Goth which is missing hear. The acting of both `Jock', Travis Van Winkle and Gabe Wood is amateur at best.

Whilst the film is clichéd in storyline and characters, the movie could still have been better. That all said it is watchable, and there are a loot of movies that are worse, the problem is that there are a lot of movies better...

2.0 out of 5 stars One Totally Missed The Cuckoo's Nest 12 Oct 2010
Format:DVD
The story was predictable, safe and all too familiar, comparisons to the Nightmare on Elm Street series are on point, but the acting and FX helps things out considerably. The characters go back and forth from mildly likable to complete cannon fodder but it's doubtful you'll continue watching this for their sparkling personalities anyhow. No, chances are you're going to want to see these cardboard crazies offed in grisly ways by a cool supernatural stalker and that's exactly what you'll get, nothing more or less.

I can't really say I was disappointed in a film that promised absolutely nothing but more of the same so to end up getting a bit more was a plus for me. The only thing I had a real problem with here was the horrible outfit worn by Doctor Burke, the killer, it was a cross between The Village People and a Cenobite. Now that gave me chills!

Asylum isn't original or scary but it's entertaining nonetheless. I can't recommend it to people looking to purchase something fun but if you're looking to rent something slightly better than the usual crap you accidentally end up with, you could do worse than Asylum. It's not great, it's not even really good but I wasn't utterly disappointed as the final credits scrolled and that, for me, is always a positive when it comes to films like this. Give it a shot...or don't...you won't be missing anything you haven't seen a hundred times before.
