4.0 out of 5 stars good substitute for a PC 12 April 2013
Verified Purchase
This laptop replaced a tower PC and quite honestly it more than adequately fills the role of a PC. The larger screen is invaluable and the processor seems fast and efficient. Build quality is good too for a lower end product. However windows 8 is a TOTAL nightmare, considerably reducing functionality - stick with Windows 7 if you possibly can. W8 just tries to make your laptop into some overgrown iphone for idiots. Get your act together Microsoft.

3.0 out of 5 stars Its the OS thats the Problem 18 April 2013

The hardware in this laptop is great; runs smoothly, feels solid and are very good for the price.
The big problem is the OS, windows 8 is pretty bad. It's made for a touchscreen, that's a fact.
The laptop was not for myself but family. If it was myself I would void the warranty and format the hard drive as soon as possible and put in windows 7. If you don't mind voiding your warranty and can get windows 7 go ahead this will be a great laptop.

It's the OS that gives it this rating.Would be a 5 otherwise if it had windows 7 or even Linux.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, despite Windows 8 31 May 2013
Verified Purchase
Given the reasonable price this ASUS laptop offers a very good compromise for a larger screen laptop with reasonable performance and excellent display.

Would have appreciated a longer battery life and a less heavy package.

I use free software Advanced System Care to manage the tidiness of the system. I was delighted to find that it offered me the option of adding a Start button to my desktop! Fantastc!!! Makes life a lot easier when I am checking for Windows updates or looking for files from a USB pen drive. Perhaps Microsoft should follow them in their footsteps.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless 6 Jun 2013

I've never regretted a purchase more. Windows 8 aside (I don't like it at all but tried to keep an open mind and get used to it), the whole thing is kind of clunky. Why produce a really heavy laptop (fair enough, heavy because of the big screen) and then not give it a full-size keyboard in compensation? A tinny little keyboard marooned in a large sea of plastic is really awkward to type on.

Not to mention the clunky DVD drive, the dodgy ports, the horrible sound quality...

And then the whole thing just dies after 6 weeks and ASUS customer service is no help at all.

I would not recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing Special, but Worth the Money
A decent laptop for a good price. Windows 8 is horrifically slow and doesn't like playing well with any non-touch device, which is the only real negative in an otherwise great... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars what version of windows 8 is this laptop????
It matters because if it is windows rt you cant install as many applications on it and it is basically a waste of money if you do anything more than browse the internet on it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good so far
Bought 2 identical laptops for family, both were very easy to set up and continue to work very well and good speed. Quality of build is good, hopefully will last the test of time

3.0 out of 5 stars Unnecessarily complicated
The laptop is fine but the Windows 8 is unbelievably complicated. I think that after Windows Vista you need to be no more than 12 years old to cope with Windows 8.
