Nice, cheap bit of kit,

This review is from: Asus EeePC 1005HA Seashell 10-inch Netbook (Intel Atom N280 1.66 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB HDD, Windows XP, up to 10 Hours Battery Life, White) (Electronics)
I have liked the idea of a really small, portable computer for years and when netbooks started to appear I was unable to pick one because they were never quite right: keyboard too small, screen res too low, nasty design or crucially, poor battery life. The Asus goes a long way to address all of those issues at a reasonable price. It's surprisingly well made (Asus recently topped a poll for reliability, narrowly beating Apple) with a nice solid feel to the case. The glossy screen is nice and bright, though like most laptops, hard to see in direct sunlight. It has plenty of ports in all of the right places and I've found the wi-fi to be very quick to pick up networks and have had no issues with signal strength. Although I haven't had 10 hours out of it, battery life has been excellent, even when playing video. The Asus has several settings that run the machine at lower capacity in order to save power and this works well although you'd be advised to put it onto the top performance setting if you want to conduct video chats or stream video off the web, as anything less results in very choppy video. YouTube plays very well, but the machine does seem to struggle a little with BBC iPlayer, even with settings on high.I'd advise putting Windows XP into it's 'classic' look in order to cut down of the graphical demands of the OS, plus there are quite a few background and startup settings that you can disable in order to free up a bit of performance for your applications. I've used Steam to install GTA: Vice City, Quake III and Peggle and all run really well and are great netbook games. Chrome runs really well on this machine and is far faster than IE or even Firefox, so I'd definitely recommend installing it. Open Office runs really well too. The only issues I have with this machine are ones that I suspect apply to all netbooks; the performance feels like an older computer, the screen size can seem a bit fiddly, the keyboard is cheap and rattles as you type and the trackpad feels a little bit small for your finger. But then you just remind yourself that this *is* a cheap computer; it doesn't cost much more than a PSP Go and a couple of games, yet gives you the full versatility of a fully-fledged home PC of a couple of years ago. This is great for travel or sofa-surfing, and the white one looks particularly smart (the black version is a finger print magnet!) but is only suitable as a second computer; it's excellent at what it does, but if you expect too much of it you will eventually get frustrated at the compromises you need to make in order to get a computer this size and for this kind of money.

The great thing about this netbook is the care put into creating the keyboard, virtually the same size as a full sized laptop keyboard, so it can be used properly. It is also beautifully finished off, the screen is excellent in all but bright light and it is whisper quiet. I purchased this netbook so I always have something I can use in an emergency when away from my desktop PCs. The build quality is superb for such a small machine and the battery life rocks! It is so light when carrying it around. The screen is very small but it is fit for purpose. The sound quality is better than I expected also. So far, so good, in that it hasn't crashed on me. I upgraded the RAM to 2 gb. For those who don't know how to do this, YouTube has a great video explaining how. I use the Asus for surfing, emailing, MS Office applications and my accounting package (VT). It all works fine. I definitely recommend this product.
