5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent plays everything 21 April 2012

Ive been looking for something like this for ages, i was looking at the Novatron Units{nd82/83, but no one seems to stock them in the UK.
Anyway glad i waited, i love ASUS products ive got 2 of their laptops and swear by them.

This has got everything the basic price of the unit is good when you consider all the extra leads to plug it into things.

Its a breeze to insert a HDD just open up the front, slideout the caddy and insert the drive and push back in, no wires, no screws.

And then the connectivity wow...............ive got a laptop with USB 3 and when transferring files between the OPlay and the laptop it copied 460GB in less than an hour.

Theres a multitude of Audio and Video connectors on the back which should just about suit everyones set up.

Picture is excellent on the DTV and EPG straightforward.

If you're computer savvy finding all the files on the drive is not to difficult. I labelled a Films And Music Folder on the disc drive and copied my associated files into them, it also creates its own REC folder.

I,m hoping that in future firmware updates they add M3U compatability for playlists and gapless playback on the music front.

Ive not even got into the wireless streaming functions which is great to mess around with your mobile.

Only downside of this and seemingly all units is that they don't give you direct Internet access with a browser, just listed content.

Im sure someone will find a work around.

In all a brilliant and versatile player and recorder ive not even discovered half of what it can do yet after 5 days.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy for TV/Freeview viewing. 23 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase
I really wouldn't recommend this product for several reasons:

1 - No TV guide which is useful for viewing whats actually on. I resort to going through each channel manually by pressing the "Ch +" button.
2 - Interface is very slow and makes you feel like you've bought a 20 fleabay knock off device.
3 - No firmware updates available for various bugs.
4 - NAS viewing is a laborious process. You cannot save a shortcut or import your movies into the main Movies folder. I havent a clue what the "Movies" folder is and Asus were themselves unable to help me.
5 - Searching through various media/devices is painful. If you have 300 Movies in a directory and you want to select - for example "Living in America" you have to scroll down one file at a time (150 remote clicks) to select the file you want. There is no quick jump to the file you want to watch. You'll be lucky if you only ever want to was "Aardvark Adventures" or "ZZ Top's greatest hits"

Lastly, and most importantly - Asus customer service was barely literate and even with Youtube videos showcasing the issues I was having, they were unable to help me. No firmware upgrade is available - and when I try to upgrade to the latest firmware I get stuck in an endless loop of upgrading the same version number.. over and over...

This product doesn't earn my efforts in trying to point out its good sides, because I really have to think hard and long to come up with them.

I bought this for its amazing and wide features. Most of which barely work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Think carefully! 27 Jan 2014

I wanted a machine able to play my music and films from an internal HDD, and to load more to the HDD as and when I had them. I bought an internal HDD, but could not copy my files to it over my network; the manual was no help at all and the Asus help line cut me off repeatedly. I could use the USB connection to play my music and videos, but that is not what was promised and not what I wanted. Message to my Linux box said something about permissions; there are no permissions, authorizations or anything resembling them referred to in the manual. My Windows box didn't even see the O!Player.
In short, it didn't do what I wanted.
Good concept, poor execution.
I'm now looking at a PC with an HDMI output to TV, and line out to amp. Rather more cumbersome, perhaps, but should do what I want.
