I bought this on a bit of a whim and i've got to say it was a good purchase. Easy to use and the wireless is also very easy to use, I just put in my network key and then I could browse files in my shared document folder. I have a lot of films on my pc, most of them being .avi format and it is brilliant at sreaming the film to my tv. No loss of quality that I can see.

If there is was one snag I would say that the forwarding of the films could be better designed as it is fine when you want to forward a bit but when you want to finish off a film that you previously didn't finish, it takes time to get to the point you were at. Could have done with a 'jump to time' option or something.

Overall though I'm very pleased with it

Asus OPlay Air HDP-R3 27 Feb 2011
I wanted a wireless media player to stream movies from my NAS through my wifi router and the OPlay Air does that with ease. It has played all the movie formats i have thrown at it from good quality 800Mb AVI files upto 5gb HD movies in AVI, MP4 and VOB formats.
BUT ASUS need to get their act together as the user interface is quite poor to navigate and there is no cover art preview window as in Windows Media center so you have to locate the media file you want by it's name which has caused my wife to refuse to use this and all my hours of attaching covers and explanation text to my movie and photo collection was for nothing, also the last firmware update killed wifi so i and many others have had to roll back to the previous firmware which is no real issue as all the functions i need work but it doesn't instill me with confidence about ASUS's software.
My step son has the Western Digital Live TV media player but as that is not wireless i dismissed it, he has confirmed that it can display cover art like windows media center via a firmware update (possibly a non official one (see youtube) but it looks like a dream to use compared to the ASUS GUI. So basically the ASUS does what it says on the tin but the user interface is poor to navigate especially if you are using a network share. I am keeping it as i hope ASUS release an improved firmware and it really has excellent picture quality in HD but i will also now invest in a Western Digital player too.

Hope this helps...L

Great Buy 30 Dec 2010
By Christ
There is a mix of comments out there. I am not an IT man but I like to play. I have a NAS drive and use PS3 to stream to my main TV but wanted something in the bedroom but did not want to use wires.

I use this all the time and I can tell you it is great. Most importantly the wireless is perfect over a d-link router provided by sky. UI is not great but does the job, remote is not great but does the job.

I spent way too much time researching alternatives and this was the one for me.

Only issue I had was out of the box the wireless connection was playing up, as soon as I downloaded the latest firmware (Under Asus AIR on Asus website) it was perfect.

I hope this helps

Good player, but you MUST do this!
Not a bad media player, but really let down by the supplied firmware. To push the potential of the hardware (especially the online features) you need to upgrade the firmware. Read more
