Book Description

1 May 1974 Vintage
Some three decades ago, in an attempt to produce a series of symbols that would be relevant to contemporary students of astrology, Marc Edmund Jones and a clairvoyant friend formulated the so-called Sabian symbols. Now Dane Rudhyar has taken these symbols and reinterpreted them to emphasize their character as a cyclic and structured series which formalizes and reveals the archetypal meaning of 360 basic phases of human experience. Rudhyar also demonstrates how the Sabian symbols can be used for divination. Like Tarot cards and the I Ching, they provide clues to the best way to face anxieties, or suggest what alternative courses of action might mean in one's life. In the form of pictures that are easily recognizable to people today, these symbols can be said to constitute a contemporary, American I Ching, a series of symbols that goes to the very root of planetary significance for our present era.

5.0 out of 5 stars An intriguing basis for innovation 30 Sep 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
An superb means of gaining insight into the cyclical nature of experience. As a Tarot reader, I found myself very much at home with the symbolic nature of the Sabian symbols. Those who find them mystifying may benefit from looking at them as triggers or seed-thoughts for intuitive understanding. Certainly, they can be read on many levels of understanding, so that some may get a lot of meaning out of them; others (like myself) may not find them so fruitful (although I have some novel methods of using them AS Tarot images, using dowsing as the means of choosing the relevant symbols thus bypassing the difficulty of having a 360 card deck to be shuffled!)

Probably this book would be most useful for an innovator or researcher who could develop new ways of applying the 360-degree cycle (in similar fashion to the many applications of the Enneagram). If you can agree with the perspective that on all levels of awareness there are "spirals within spirals" then you'll feel quite at home with this book. They who have ears to hear, let them hear . . .

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but flawed book aimed at USA market 22 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
An interesting book updating the work of Marc Edmund Jones to the seventies, however it is aimed solely at the USA market and this becomes extremely irritating after a short while for any European reader. Whilst the visions linked to each zodiac degree are fine the chapters explaining the philosophy behind the book are over embellished and seem to want to mystify the whole process unnecessarily. Basically the book needs to be rewritten for the 21st century.

4.0 out of 5 stars A valuable extra dimension to astrology 1 Nov 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The Sabian Symbols were images visualized by a psychic in 1925, randomly (or supernaturally) assigned to the 360 degrees of the Zodiac. They are peculiarly evocative, and the insightful astrologer Dane Rudhyar does a masterful job of analyzing the 360 symbols as a coherent sequence. I've found the symbols to add a new, more individual layer of meaning to an astrological chart. People who are drawn to Tarot would probably relate strongly. It would be interesting for someone to design a Tarot-like deck of cards based on the Sabian Symbols--though it might be hard to shuffle 360 cards!
