5.0 out of 5 stars An Incredible Bargain 18 Feb 2004
By Kurt Harding - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I already own more than fifty Piazzolla CDs and so was more than a little curious about what new material could be gleaned from this ambitious box set. What I found is that despite thinking that my collection must be nearing completion, my collection is far from complete indeed! While most of the songs are very familiar, at least eighty percent of the arrangements are not.
The songs within are mostly from the late 60s-70s period of Piazzolla's long and glorious career. There are some live recordings, some recordings in Portuguese, some in Italian, and some recordings made with some of the more obscure Piazzolla ensembles as well as a modest number of arrangements as presented on recordings I already own. In short, this is a veritable treasure trove of some of the twentieth century's finest compositions. After hearing this set for the first time, I wondered just how many more of Piazzolla's recordings have yet to be released.
There are no favorite songs here, they are all good. This box set is an incredible bargain-do the math-which belongs in every music lover's collection. In addition to 10 CDs, the buyer gets an informative booklet. Get it while it is still available, it is one of the best deals I have ever gotten.

4.0 out of 5 stars 20-Year Piazzolla Fan in South Florida 23 July 2007
By B. Gooden - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
While there are several repeats of songs (works) in the 10-CD set, they are recorded at different periods in the late Astor Piazzolla's musical life, with different groupings of musicians. There is an incredible amount of song material in this set for such a small amount of money. The recording quality is variable, no doubt due to the quality of the original recordings, but it is still very good overall for the collection as a whole. For anyone just newly learning about Piazzolla, this is a very good collection to have as a starter set, at a very low price. And, for an oldtimer like me who already has a lot of CD albums of both Piazzolla performances and those of others who have covered his work with different instrumentation, I still added a lot of new song titles to my Piazzolla song list. I was lucky enough to have seen Piazzolla perform in concert in Miami about 1-2 years before his stroke, and 3-4 years before he died in 1992. I was also lucky to have heard and learned about his work before that time, even though it was long after he became famous (I never owned a Piazzolla record). It would have been nice to have an explanatory booklet ("liner notes") about the various works, even if the set cost a couple bucks more, which is why I downgraded to 4 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Intentionally Obfuscated? 30 Aug 2012
By Thelonious - Published on Amazon.com

Yes, this is a good deal and yes, the sound seems pretty good to me, but I object to the scrambling of the tracks and the obfuscation of the sources. FWIW here's the full track listing and info from the 10 CDs. I'm going to try to sort out the actual sources - if so, I'll try to remember to post them here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Contents of the box set 10 Feb 2011
By Irroub Golb - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
My box set didn't come with a booklet, and I'm not sure what kind've information would have been included in the booklet even if it had, but after poking around all afternoon on Piazzolla dot org, it looks like about half of this box set (4 hours 54 minutes out of the total 9 hours and 20 minute run time) is made up of the following previously released material (much of which is otherwise out of print):

[1969] Ástor Piazzolla Y Su Quinteto - Adiós Noniño
[1973] Ástor Piazzolla Y Su Conjunto 9 - El Penultimo (single)
[1974] Ástor Piazzolla & Amelita Baltar - Amelita Baltar
[1976] Ástor Piazzolla & José Angel Trelles - Balada Para Un Loco
[1993] Ástor Piazzolla - Oblivion (compilation)
[1993] Ástor Piazzolla Y Su Noneto - Tristeza De Un Doble "A" (Live, Rome 1972)
[1994] Ástor Piazzolla w/ S.W.F. Rundfunkorchester - Aconcagua * Tres Tangos (recorded 1983)

The rest is odds and ends comprised of mostly complete concerts and orphaned studio recordings.

A certain amount of guess work was involved in compiling this list--the box set is seemingly intentionally laid out in such a way as to obfuscate where the tracks came from. On the flip-side, the sound quality is great and this is a great way to get a LOT of Piazzolla's recordings relatively inexpensively, so I still recommend it.

If anyone can improve on this list, post it in the comments and I'll update my review.

2.0 out of 5 stars Puzzle solved: the real content of the box explained 7 Aug 2013
By Stan A - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Even though the price for this 10-CD set is extremely attractive, after extensive research I decided not to buy it. The results of my research are below, and for those who want to preview MP3's for this set, please do the following:
- go to the Amazon UK site;
- search for "piazzolla midget" in MP3 Downloads. As of today, you'll see 14 albums. 10 of those have identical generic cover of the dancing couple - those are the ones matching this set.

The good:
Lots of great music for cheap, this set is derived from material licensed by Aldo Pagani, so, with a possible exception of one track, everything is recorded between 1968 and 1984.

The bad:
The track order totally jumbled, so as to obfuscate the origins of each track. Even though seven complete (or almost complete) original albums could be assembled from this set, one would have to spend considerable effort to rip CDs and rearrange tracks in the right order.
Also, any serious Piazzolla collector would probably have most (if not all) tracks from this set. With one possible exception discussed below, there are no previously unreleased tracks, rarities etc.
There was no attempt to remove duplicate tracks, so you'll hear 10 or 11 tracks twice (basically, one CD out of ten is wasted.) Under "duplicate" I mean the exact same recording of a title, different versions of the same title don't count as such.
Finally, take all information from the artwork with a big grain of salt: a couple of tracks switched names, many have typos, duration is not always correct etc. etc. Information about personnel and recording dates and locations is about 70-80% accurate.

OK, here's the content of this set after some detective work - ten complete previously issued CDs (roughly in the order they appear in the set):

1) Masterpieces Vol.2: Otono Porteno (ANS 12002)
==includes the complete original "Adios Nonino" LP from 1969 plus complete instrumental music from "Maria De Buenos Aires" (recorded in 1968, released as side B of the "Pulsacion" LP from 1969)

2) Piazzolla & Amelita Baltar (Bella Musica ‎- BM 31.7037)
==Includes the complete original LP from 1974 plus "El Gordo Triste" from a '72 single.

3) Oblivion (ANS 12005)
==Includes the "Jeanne y Paul/El penultimo" single (1972), a few tracks each from "Musica Popular Contemporanea de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires" Vol.1 and Vol.2 (also 1972) and the majority of the "Henry IV" soundtrack from 1984. The complete version of "Mufa 72" (see #9 below) included in the original Italian CD is dropped from this reissue.

4) Astor Piazzolla con Jose Angel Trelles (Personality 23199)
==Reissue of the complete original Trova LP "Ballada Para Un Loco" from 1976.

5) Masterpieces Vol.3: Biyuya (ANS 12003)
==Contains 10 of the 15 tracks from the Milan concert from 1984. Piazzolla's introduction is also here, but didn't make it onto the set.

6) Concertant (Bella Musica BM 31.7034)
==Piazzolla recordings with Symphonic Orchestras. "Concierto para Bandoneón y Orquesta" and "Tres Tangos" recorded in Germany in 1983, previously issued as "Aconcagua" (ANS 12006). "Suite Punta Del Este" recorded in Caracas in 1981, previously issued as such (ANS 12007) together with the five remaining tracks of the Milan concert above (those tracks are NOT included in this set).

7) Anos De Soledad (Apc 3702, also Halidon)
==Very similar to "Oblivion" - the same single, a track from "Musica Popular Contemporanea de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires Vol.1", "Jorge Adios" from the "Rain Over Santiago", the title track from "Libertango" and a few other well known titles. Nothing particularly rare.

8) "En Suite" (Phantom Import Distribution / Ais / Trova 5059)
==This looks like an interesting compilation, which culls from different sources three "suites": "Del Angel", "Remembrance" and "Four Seasons"."Remembrance" is taken in full from the "Henry IV" soundtrack. "Del Angel" mostly draws from the same Milan concert as above (#5), but takes "Introduccion" probably from as early as 1962 or 1963 (it seems that it has never been rerecorded since then). Judging from track timings, "Four Seasons", surprisingly, are not sourced from the only concert where they appeared together: "Piazzolla el Regina". Also, it's quite likely that some of them are truncated, as most recordings I know of have longer running times. This might be the only remaining puzzle to solve for this 10-disc set.

9) Masterpieces Vol.1: Fuga y misterio (ANS 12001)
==Contains an almost complete Rome concert from 1972. (The last track - "Mufa 72" - is truncated from 7:25 to 2:45. The full version of this track was included on the original Italian "Oblivion" CD, but this set borrows tracks from the American ANS reissue (see #3 above), which doesn't have it.

10) Masterpieces Vol. 4: Balada para un loco (ANS 12004)
==Contains the complete Buenos Aires concert from 1976.

To conclude, the only intriguing item for me is "En Suite" (#8). However, no information can be found for this compilation - "recorded in 1984" is probably correct for only 7 tracks out of 12 (and those 7 tracks I already have). This might as well turn out to be a dud, and I'm not going to buy this set just to find that out. Incidentally, a two-CD set combining #7 and #8 is now available from Best Buy for only $5.99 with free U.S. shipping (see SKU 15707139).
