5.0 out of 5 stars Joss Whedon Gets It Right Again, 1 April 2005
This is Joss Whedon's second notable effort at writing for comics (see Fray - Buffy of the future but completely different which is also fantastic) and he seems to have a talent for it, whether working with other people's characters or his own. The setting for Astonishing X-men is simple - Professor Xavier is off on Genosha doing all of the stuff that you can see in Excalibur - and so Emma Frost and Scott Summers are running the school as joint headmasters. Completing the senior staff are Henry 'Hank' McCoy (Beast), Wolverine and Kitty Pryde, returning after her time at uni. But even before everyone is settled down, news of a mutant cure spreads and causes chaos among the mutant community.

'Gifted' grabs you right from the start and doesn't let you go. Whedon handles the relationships in X-men masterfully: Emma and Scott, the tension between Scott and Logan, so well that you can't tell that he hasn't written for X-men before. He manages to succeed by getting the little things right (Beast's desire to be 'normal', Logan's cynicism and sometimes barely controlled aggression) and introducing slightly new things that work - like giving Kitty a bit more of a back bone than she's had in her appearances in X-treme X-men.

If you're just starting to delve into the world of the X-men then I suggest that you read the Ultimate series rather than this because while there isn't too much revisiting of the past it does help to be familiar with what has happened before this series.

Overall this looks like one of the better Marvel series to be released in the last few years and if you're trying to choose just one to read then this one of the most rewarding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic X Men, 9 Oct 2004
By A Customer
Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Fray has written one of the best-selling X Men titles in years. Few comics topped it in the sales (Superman/Batman, a few others) but is it any good?
Well, yes. Joss clearly loves his characters as much as the rest of us, so theres no fear of him buggering it up. Although little happens in each issue (due to the average of maybe 4 panels per issue)it adds up to one great volume. Better than most recent X Men gargle.

5.0 out of 5 stars X-Men, the way they should be, 26 Aug 2005
I've been a fan of the X-Men since I was teenager but its been an on-off relationship for the last few years as I've found the various storylines and spin-offs lacking in something. Happily, that has changed with the publication of Astonishing X-Men volume 1. The storyline is great, the characterisation and dialogue are excellent and the artwork is eyecatching. In short, this is X-men the way they should be. Enjoy it.
