Helping pupils with special educational needs relies on sound assessment. Based on years of research at the University of Aston, the "Aston Index" is a comprehensive battery of tests for screening and diagnosing language difficulties. It provides the teacher with a complete profile of the pupil's underlying ability and attainment in different skill areas. A thorough understanding of the needs and difficulties of individual children is offered - a sound basis for planning a programme of remedial work. The battery of 16 tests enable the teacher to examine the pupil's strengths and weaknesses in visual and auditory discrimination, motor co-ordination, written language, reading and spelling, and to measure an individual pupil's general underlying ability and attainment with reference to the child's mental age and attainment relevant to their age.
