Having had 'Cleopatra', 'Britain' and 'The Big Fight' on video before, I had hoped to get the other three. But though they no longer appear to be available individually, I was excited to find this complete box-set. I can honestly say that I got a splendid deal out of it!
Sure enough, there are different voice actors for some of the movies and the French signs haven't been converted to English, but then this is a French comic and the films seem to have been produced by various companies. I still feel that the English dubs were well cast for the roles.

To tackle each film individually:
Asterix the Gaul - this one is shorter than the others and thin on plot, but this was the first comic and I give it credit for remaining faithful to the book. This was actually very well done, and a good laugh.
Asterix and Cleopatra - we had this one on video before, but unfortunately the quality was poor and the audio was overdubbed, causing an obtrusive echo. I'm happy to say the DVD version is cleaned up beautifully!
The Twelve Tasks - probably the best of the batch. Full of laughs, well-animated and a fun storyline. The Isle of Pleasure part was most enjoyable, with the musical sequence performed by the animals of the island (including a squirrel with a clarinet that hadn't been invented yet).
Asterix and Caesar - this was also a very well done film and I enjoyed it a lot. There was quite a strong storyline to this one. Some of the funniest moments include Obelix's crush on Panacea, and the scene when he dived in the pool...
As for 'Britain' and 'the Big Fight', I already know they are good.
That said, however, I was disappointed to find 'the Big Fight' was an American dub version, with different names and voice-acting I personally found inferior to the former British version.

I was so looking forward to this set, having only seen The Twelve Tasks of Asterix and Asterix in Britain.

What you get are these two excellent films, and four mediocre ones - I was bored to tears by the remainder of the set - poor voice dubbing, no real genuine funny moments and dull plots. The fact the characters change voices between one film and the next does not help matters. The original French dubs featured the same voice actors in every film, but for these international versions it seems any old Tom Dick or Harry can play the roles. Half the time Asterix sounds so far away from the action hero type roll he was intended for.

Which leads me on to the discs themselves. No original French versions, no subtitles, no extras. The worst thing though is the fact five out of six films are presented in widescreen, when they were intended to be seen full frame. This leads to many tall characters getting their heads chopped off in close-up mode and is very distracting. The one film that was intended to be seen in widescreen is in full screen - where is the logic in that?!

So well done Optimum for screwing up this release. The only plus side is the low Amazon price which is currently £18 for six discs.

Yes. I've always wondered why the Asterix cartoons were so hard to get in the UK on DVD. (I got some from Amazon France, same as I got Lucky Luke...they have English tracks if you want).

Now at last we can view the pugnatious little chap with his big boned partner Obelix in digital glory.

BUT where are the options? My French discs have french titles (and are Region 2 too!)but have a range of languages available on sound and subtitle. All these have is the option to show it all or select from 8 chapters per movie. Disappointing.

They are also widish aspect ratio... I suspect Asterix and Cleopatra (see the live action one! its a HOOT!) has been cropped top and bottom to widen it in the same way as they used to pan and scan widescreen movies for TV.

I'm sorry to be so negative... 6 Asterix movies for this price is a darn good buy and no mistake. I just regret that the opportunity to give a little added value per disk was missed.

Brilliant Films but not for the British Market
Other reviews will no doubt warn you about the quality (or lack thereof), I feel obligated - as a Brit - to warn you about the voices: this is the American cut of the film. Read more
