Having had 'Cleopatra', 'Britain' and 'The Big Fight' on video before, I had hoped to get the other three. But though they no longer appear to be available individually, I was excited to find this complete box-set. I can honestly say that I got a splendid deal out of it!
Sure enough, there are different voice actors for some of the movies and the French signs haven't been converted to English, but then this is a French comic and the films seem to have been produced by various companies. I still feel that the English dubs were well cast for the roles.
To tackle each film individually:
Asterix the Gaul - this one is shorter than the others and thin on plot, but this was the first comic and I give it credit for remaining faithful to the book. This was actually very well done, and a good laugh.
Asterix and Cleopatra - we had this one on video before, but unfortunately the quality was poor and the audio was overdubbed, causing an obtrusive echo. I'm happy to say the DVD version is cleaned up beautifully!
The Twelve Tasks - probably the best of the batch. Full of laughs, well-animated and a fun storyline. The Isle of Pleasure part was most enjoyable, with the musical sequence performed by the animals of the island (including a squirrel with a clarinet that hadn't been invented yet).
Asterix and Caesar - this was also a very well done film and I enjoyed it a lot. There was quite a strong storyline to this one. Some of the funniest moments include Obelix's crush on Panacea, and the scene when he dived in the pool...
As for 'Britain' and 'the Big Fight', I already know they are good.
That said, however, I was disappointed to find 'the Big Fight' was an American dub version, with different names and voice-acting I personally found inferior to the former British version.
