Being a big fan of Asterix and knowing that the majority of the movies were pretty good, this was an instant purchase. The first disappointment was that it was hardly complete - fair enough that it doesn't have the recent Vikings or the awful live-action films on, but no Asterix In America? The second disappointment came after watching.
Now, before watching this set I would've said that 12 Tasks Of Asterix, Asterix Vs Caesar, Asterix And The Big Fight and Asterix In Britain were excellent and Asterix And Cleopatra and Asterix The Gaul were merely alright for kids. Which makes 2-1 in favour of the box set being excellent.
Unfortunately as a previous reviewer noted, Big Fight is NOT the superior UK version. It is the utterly atrocious American version, complete with unnecessary narration, stupid contradictory names (Vitamin Potion and not Magic Potion, yet Wizard not a Druid? If he's a wizard why can't his potion still be called Magic?), and awful acting with poor attempts at accents. Moreover, it actually appears to be dubbed OVER THE TOP of the British dub, as I definitely heard Asterix shout out "Getafix!" at an early point in the film. And no Brian Blessed as the Centurion either, which makes me even more angry.
This ruins the film entirely, which explains why so many people say that Big Fight is rubbish. The UK version is superb... this DVD version, sadly, isn't, and knocks the package down a whole two stars for stupidity.
So that's three great Asterix films, two okay, and one ruined. You think it's worth that? Go ahead and buy it.
