Assignment in Brittany is a classical spy and war hero story with a handsome gentleman and a fair lady. What makes it interesting is that in 1942 Helen McInnes writes in the safety of the U.S. and describes fictional events happening in the Summer of 1940 in Brittany. At the time of writing Hitler had not been conquered and the threat to her native Britain was very real. The author writes fluently and the story keeps you in it's grips, I was galloping to the end just to see how the story developed. Relaxing and entertaining reading.

This is a very fair, fast moving tale of behind-the-lines warfare in occupied France in 1940. However, the characterisation is rather one-dimensional, and the human interest somewhat stereotyped.
