This book is packed full with exceptionally useful creative techniques for practitioners working therapeutically with children, adolescents and families. This book offers a clear rationale and guidelines for selecting and using the activities, which proves beneficial, relevant and useful to the practitioner.

The book is divided into digestable sections of creative intervention according to the therapeutic aim, providing a wealth of creative activities and techniques for: engagement and assessment, feelings expression, social skills, coping and problem-solving, self-esteem and termination. Each activity is explained in detail for ease of use, clearly stating the theme, recommendeded age range, treatment modality i.e. individual/group/family, goals, materials, activity description, discussion and information about the background of author of the activity. This enables the practitioner to easily select the appropriate intervention specific to the client's need. The book also contains some very useful photocopiable resources for use by the client which complement specific activities. The detailed table of contents also allows for quick and easy referencing.

Both as a teacher and play therapist I found this book an excellent practical resource, packed full of imaginative and inspiring ideas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good 14 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have used some of the activities in this book for the children I work with (I'm a psychologist). Some of them, however, are a bit "American" and not particularly suitable in Britain I would say. Also, many are aimed at therapeutic groups, so if you only work 1-1 with children you may wish to think twice about buying this.

Liana Lowenstein has compiled a great set of activities for assessing and treating children, teens, and families from practitioners from the US, Canada, and Europe. I know Liana and some of the contributors personally from my involvement with the Association for Play Therapy. They are well-respected in play therapy and their own professional circles (counselors and counselor educators, psychologists, social workers, and marriage and family therapists) and cherished colleagues.

Although these activities were contributed by many different authors, Liana has done a nice job of keeping a common format so that the user can clearly see the goals for assessment or treatment, materials needed, advanced preparation guidelines, directions for leading the activity, and a discussion from the author of its benefits or other indications. Each author's bio is also included so that readers can see in what context the activities have been created and used. As with her other Creative Interventions books, this one is also organized according to helpful themes that cover specific topics, as well as process-specific stages of therapy: engagement and assessment, feelings expression, social skills, coping and problem-solving, self-esteem, and termination.

I am currently pulling ideas from this and two other of Liana's books (Assessment and Treatment Activities for Children, Adolescents, and Families (Vol. 2): Practitioners Share Their Most Effective Strategies AND Creative Interventions for Bereaved Children) to plan psychological first-aid and debriefing interventions for child, teen, and family victims of trauma, violent crime, and sudden death of a loved one.
