Review

"...this timely publication offers a collection of key methods and practical skills necessary to carry out building performance assessment." - MCEER Information Service News, March/April 2005

Product Description

The building performance evaluation (BPE) framework emphasizes an evaluative stance throughout the six phases of the building delivery and life cycle: (1) strategic planning/needs analysis; (2) program review; (3) design review; (4) post-construction evaluation/review; (5) post-occupancy evaluation; and, (6) facilities management review/adaptive reuse.

The lessons learned from positive and negative building performance are fed into future building delivery cycles. The case studies illustrate how this basic methodology has been adapted to a range of cultural contexts, and indicates the positive results of building performance assessment in a wide range of situations.

*Practical advice on assessing and monitoring building performance.
*Illustrated with practical case studies.
*Written by a unparalleled team of international experts.

I used this book whilst writing my final year dissertation on the post-occupancy evaluation of a naturally ventilated office building.

Each chapter within the book is written by international experts in their field, who describe an introduction to POE, or BPE, performance assessments and some case studies that indicate the performance of buildings from around the world.

I credit this book for increasing my dissertation grade from a pass to a pass with merit. The information contained within was great background on the POE process and history, but also on how BPE has been used throughout the design process and around the world.

The only downside I would say is that some of the case studies are a bit weak - do we learn anything more about workspace performance just because there is a study in Brazil? And some of the questionnaires in the back lack balance for proper, unbiased statistical analysis. That said the book is a treasure trove of info and a must buy for those conducting a study of a building as part of a research study fulfilling part of a dissertation.
