Reviews

British chiller from 1971 about a fiend preying on young girls attending a posh school. Tessa Hurst (Lesley-Anne Down) is abducted and raped in the grounds of her private school. The youngster is struck dumb by her traumatic experience, leaving detectives very little to go on. Shortly thereafter Susan Miller (Annabel Littledale), another girl from the same school is also molested in the same manner, only she dies as a result. The school's art teacher Julie West (Suzy Kendall) accidentally witnesses the killer as he's taking flight this time. In an ill-advised move, she decides to play the bait in a trap to catch the rapist. The subsequent police investigation turns up many suspects ranging from the Headmistress's hubby to Lomax, (James Laurenson) the doctor treating the first victim. The idea of giving the first victim truth serum to loosen her tongue is hatched but what happens next, no-one could have predicted.

A tasty, salacious and stylish little whodunnit produced by Peter Rogers, the man behind the Carry On films.
Along with 'Eyewitness', this is the closest thing I've seen to an English giallo, and the plot revolves around schoolgirls being assaulted and murdered in the woods outside their school. The giallo feel is increased by plenty of stylish camera work, sleazy characters, and giallo queen Suzy Kendall as the main female lead. Well worth a watch if you like gialli, and other odd sleazy films from the early seventies, which I do!

Some (well one actually) of the reviews are hysterical and seem to rate this film much higher than it deserves. OK it's not overly salacious, and the subject matter and rape scenes are, for the time , fairly tame I suppose, but the way it's directed is poor in places - by making the camera the rapist it has given him magical powers to float around, behind, in front of, his victim instead of just chasing them. Small point but it annoyed me. Freddie Jones is just bloody awful (and I am normally a fan)- his character is so ridiculously OTT you just laugh with disbelief. Everyone else are/is? a bit boring. However... and it's important- the film is saved, for me, by having a) an excellent print (tho sound a bit muffled in it's dubbing) and b) the glorious wonderful Suzy Kendall! Only Susan George could match her in a mini skirt, and she can act! And Lesley Anne Down shows a hell of a lot of promise. Between them they make the film watchable and worthy of 3 stars, but it ain't a classic.

Yes, indeed ! "Assault" may be qualified as a British giallo. Of course, it's not so bloody like Italian movies, but there are some good scenes. It's worth watching as a real curiosity. The print is rather good and Suzy Kendall is wonderful to look at ! I recommand this film.

THis film is a classic. It manages to disturb , intrigue and surprise throughout. Very much ahead of it's time , although dated now by the dress and manner of the characters. Any film with Freddie Jones deserves a watch. Both Tony Beckley and Frank Finlay are excellent while Suzy Kendall commands attention with every appearance. There is also an appearance by Anthony Ainley who is familiar to millions as the The Master from Doctor Who throughout the eighties. If you like retro Horror/Thriller movies then you'll love 'Assault' .

I think you have to turn a blind eye to some of the inconsistencies of early 70s chillers. Why those girls kept running into the woods when murders had taken place had me mystified. It's one of those where one minute we're in broad daylight and the next night has fallen. There are plenty of red herrings here, to be savoured. Did girls really wear skirts as short as Suzy Kendall's? And Lesley Anne Down (pre Upstairs Downstairs) looks rather at sea. Watch out for David Essex in a small role. There's enough to keep you amused and interested.
