Having lost both Cozy Powell on drums and Gary Barden on vocals, many fans waited with baited breath to hear the next MSG studio offering back in `82. Then came album no. 4 "Assault Attack", still trademark Schenker but sounding very different with renowned new vocalist Graham Bonnet.
Graham Bonnet is very much an acquired taste. I was not happy when I knew the screamer was replacing Barden at the time. I was also more than pleased when Barden returned, Mr. Bonnet having left rather abruptly after one album and a solitary performance in Sheffield. But you have to admit that the dynamic vocals do help to make this a great album with quality performances by Bonnet and Schenker.
"Desert Song" is easily the best track, a beautifully constructed atmospheric number powerfully sung. The title track "Assault Attack" has recently been used as a tour opener and is a powerful rocker. My other stand outs are "Broken Promises" and the timeless bluesy guitar number "Rock you to the Ground". "Dancer" was the attempt at a more commercial style and recorded as a single and along with "Searching for a Reason" are perhaps the weaker songs. To Mr. Bonnet's credit I guess there are very few singers around with the vocal range and power to pull off these numbers live to the same intensity. Now Schenker has a huge catalogue of material these songs are largely ancient history.
As with all the recent crop of re-masters it's nicely done with greater clarity. Reasons to buy another copy then. Great little booklet and only one extra track that being the flip side to the "Dancer" single, another nice chug- a-long number "Girl From Uptown".
On reflection I appreciate this album a lot more now than when it first came out. Bonnet received criticism for not being a good song writer but I think he gets away with it on this album due to the quality of the music, some long instrumental sections and the Martin Birch production.
I would certainly buy the first three albums before this one to hear the best MSG work but now think this is also 5 star quality.
