Product Description

"A learned, engagingly discursive, funny, sometimes even jolly ramble -- literally -- through the landscape of American presidential assassinations...Vowell makes an excellent traveling companion, what with her rare combination of erudition and cheek." -- Bruce Handy, "The New York Times Book Review"

5.0 out of 5 stars Stories about dead people = Fun 10 April 2006
This is one of the funniest books that I have ever read! The way Vowell shares her morbid fascination for all things linked to presidents that have been killed is great, it even got me longing to go visit "Halloween Parks". And I now have a entirely new list of places I wanna go to if I should visit USA.
All toghetter a great book that not only makes you laugh, but also educates you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three assassinations 18 Jan. 2010
Sarah Vowell has written a superb book about three of the four murders of the president. JFK is omitted as it is within living memory and is well covered elsewhere. The president, their assassin, their relatives, the contemporary view, the succeeding vice president and where they are all buried now is all covered by her keen eye and acerbic wit.
SV is a fairly partisan Democrat. There are digs at Nader, George W Bush (although no-one else has drawn the parallels between Iraq and McKinley's occupation of the Phillipines). However this is only a couple of paragraphs in a 200 page book.
One passage deals with her and Nick Hornby in Gramercy Park,NYC, home to a statue of Edwin Booth [brother of John Wilkes Booth].

5.0 out of 5 stars American History 101 25 Jan. 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I probably have a slightly unhealthy interest in untimely death, so I was looking forward to reading about political assassinations, and I wasn't let down! This book approaches them in a lighthearted yet ultimately highly informative way, and reflects on their interaction with American Museum culture which was interesting for me as an art historian.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lincoln Centric 1 Jan. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was an enjoyable read, with enough historical fact to be educational too. The coverage of Lincoln and the surrounding characters dominates, Garfield and McKinley are relatively lightly covered, but not to the extent it ruins the balance.

4.0 out of 5 stars History made easy 12 Nov. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you like history but think the books will be boring this is for you. Easy to read but very informative and full of some very strange facts.
