Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

As you play Max Payne you will find yourself moving through the game with a psychological and emotional connection. The innovative bullet time feature slows the pace down to Matrix-like action, allowing you to kill more than one bad guy at a time. You also have a quick save feature, allowing you to save the game where you are, at any time, and resume from there ...should you get killed or need to take a break. The game also uses movie-like cinematics, capturing realistic smoke, blood and particle effects, and edgy drug/dream sequences. You will also find fast cut scenes to keep you involved as well as an excellent use of film techniques. This is a game that truly celebrates the "beauty" in violence...kids need not apply.

5.0 out of 5 stars Max Payne Review 10 July 2002
By A Customer
General/Summary: The overall storyline is very in-depth, as well as addictive. This game is will have you stuck to your monitor! I played it for about 8 hours straight one day.
The beginning starts off as Max is coming home from a usual day at the NYPD. He comes home to a ransacked house. He races upstairs to check on his family, only to find them brutally slain. He runs across the killers who are jacked-up on Valkyr, the new wonder drug that was sweeping New York. Of course, he kills them and then the next day transfers to the DEA. You then move up a while where Max is working deep undercover infiltrating a Mafia family. He was supposed to meet his boss at the subway staion, but as he arrives, he finds him missing. Eventually, his boss is murdered next to him and he is framed for it. So, he starts a vendetta against the mafia family and the creators of Valkyr.

Gameplay: The gameplay is very good and fast-paced. There is never a minute without any action. And the whole game is not just about cappin' mobsters, it involves in-depth thinking and many skills. This isn't a game for the amateur gamer. I especially love the bullet time.
The only thing I really did not like in the game are the dream scenes and the quick-save utility. The dream scenes were ok for a little bit, but how can you actually die in a dream?? I didn't go out and pay 40 bucks for an action game where you hop around on pools of blood.
I also didn't like the quick-save. It is a good tool to have, but if someone else plays and taps F5, it will overwrite you game. I was on the final level and my brothere ended up erasing my game. Be sure to click the save button in the menu when you exit the game!
Also, this game never froze up on my computer! Excellent!

Graphics: The graphics are excellent. Even with an 850 processor, 32 MB graphic card, and 64 megs of RAM, I experienced no "slide shows" at all on the "medium" detail setting. Everything is very realistic. The flames are great. Muzzle fashes are well done. Max's jacket flaps around as he runs. Nothing wrong in this area.

Sound: The sound was excellent. I like how the music relates to the mood of the level, like on the map whrere you have to take out the trio. Weapons sound excellent. I especially like the metallic 'clang' of the hand grenade. Each gun has it's own unique sound. Once again, no major problems in this area.
