Product Description

Someone with Asperger syndrome lives in a different world from the majority of people who are 'neurotypical'. The resulting social struggle can impair self-esteem and mental health, leading to isolation, misunderstanding and depression. This book looks at the social potential of adults with Asperger syndrome, and how they may contribute on their own terms. Topics include; what it feels like to have Asperger syndrome, Asperger syndrome - disorder or difference, social relationships, including social strengths such as loyalty and patience, sensory overload and coping with the external environment, Aspergers in love - finding and maintaining an intimate relationship, if your partner has Asperger syndrome, employment, help and advice. In this thorough guide, Dr Ruth Searle says that someone with Asperger syndrome interacts with the world from a unique perspective. Be true to yourself and reach for your highest aspirations.

A while ago I gave up trying to find any useful information about the experiences of adults with Asperger's. There was lots based on research and work with children, but nothing that accurately matched my own theories and observations of what it's like to be an adult with Asperger's. This book, which I happened upon in the library yesterday, has renewed my hope and interest. In particular, I had real aha! moments when reading about how intolerant NT people are, and the distress this causes to those with Asperger's. This book has reawakened my interest. I feel excited to know more, and now realise that Amazon is a better place to look than my library! I would like to see more on what it's like to be a woman with Asperger's, and on what coping strategies they develop to appear 'normal'. The bias in this book is mainly towards males with the syndrome.

I bought this book as a guide and help with my daughter who has Aspergers. it is a waste of paper. The second page was a clue there is a large list of "how to/living with" medical books and this has obviously been produced to order to cover another medical syndrome. It is very clinical but provides very little practical help or guidance. The Author Dr Ruth Searle is a marine biologist and although I'm sure very knowledable in her field should stay away from this sort of writing. square peg round hole. It is extremely dry and not very readable. The chapter headings give hope of being useful but the contents are too remote from life experience and come across as "Lab" observations. It quotes behaviour examples but these read as if just cut and pasted from the internet. There are two books which I found useful. An Asperger marriage and Aspergirls. The latter is quite American but gives useful insights, explanations and some guidance. As with all books not evrything is pertinent to everyones situation but these I found more useful than most

I bought this book shortly after self-diagnosing myself with Aspergers and found it an excellent place to start.
It is concise, straight forward and well-written. Whilst it doesn't go massively in depth, it provides a good overview, which certainly makes an ideal starting point for anyone who wants/needs to know about Aspergers. I found this book to be heartening and encouraging. Personally, making my discovery was like a light being switched on that gave me hope and for the first time ever - confidence. This book has helped tremendously by highlighting the many positive traits that can be focused on. The negative aspects are given equal coverage in a way that is far from disheartening and is instead more if a gentle warning - things to be aware of that can be worked on. It does definitely focus more on males with Aspergers than females, because as the book itself states, the vast majority of Aspergians are male. This is by no means the only book you should get on Aspergers, but it is a fantastic place to kick off with.
