I bought this in order to be able to understand real and model railway layouts in preparation for planning and building my own (first) layout in OO gauge. The diagrams are clear, the text is informative and with the optimum level of detail and the author clearly knows his stuff!
I've gone from total train newbie to focussed, informed model railway builder by reading this book amongst others and am thoroughly happy to recommend this book to anyone planning a layout.
I'd recommend this alongside the other "Aspects" series of books as a way of reading into and planning a model railway project in easy to digest, yet really helpful steps.

This book deals with designing a layout for an indoor model railway. It contains some good ideas, e.g. consider cramped city terminals, think of seaside termini, consider 'looped 8' layouts. However, I thought the actual illustrations of the track plans prepared for the book were poor, (reminiscent of those in the Hornby Magazine) and did not compare favourably with the track plans that were shown from other sources. If the specially prepared track plan illustrations could be improved it would make the book more worthwhile.

Good book, great layouts and simple to follow. Good images as they explain the whole picture far better than a mass of text.

Too many large plans
If there is one fault with this book, it is that the plans are mainly for large spaces. Even the small plans omit the fiddle yard which would almost double the length of the plan. Read more

Very disappointing
There are much better track layout books available than this one. It lacks detail and the explanations are not at all clear.

An excellent publication for a beginner. It explains the ins and outs of designing a layout. Also the traps that can ensnare a novice.

This is ok although it only had about 3 layouts that were suitable for the size of board that we were using it is good to look at and then modify to what you will need.
