Product Description

CD Description

Lance Ellington is one of those singers whom you will have heard on many artists records and on many TV shows without being aware, as he is a highly successful and very busy session vocalist. His public profile has broadened in recent times as the featured vocalist on BBC TV s hugely successful Strictly Come Dancing . However, he is also a marvellous performer in his own right, his voice a blend of all the classic crooners and soul balladeers, with echoes of Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, George Benson, Michael Buble and more. This 2-CD set brings together two previously released albums which showcase different sides of Lance s music, the first a collection of classic big band jazz standards from the Great American Songbook, many using original arrangements by the likes of Nelson Riddle, Billy May and Neal Hefti, while the other is in the smooth contemporary easy listening jazz idiom, comprising mainly original material. As the son of hugely popular drummer, bandleader and singer Ray Ellington, Lance has an impeccable musical pedigree, and this collection confirms that there is no better interpreter of great songs around at the moment.

About the Artist

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON, as the saying goes, and it was fairly inevitable that Lance Ellington would follow his father, Ray Ellington, into showbusiness. Ray was a prominent part of that scene fifty years ago, forming his own Quartet in 1950 and later a big band, singing jazz and appearing in the surreal Goon Show where his dexterity on the bongos was often heard, as well as some brief but hilarious interjections in the scripts. He was a larger than life character, a sunny soul noted for his frequently used comment of appreciation, Oooo, that s nice! I can t remember the exact moment when I decided I wanted to become part of show business smiles Lance. It must have been really early on because I started travelling on the road and going to the studios with Dad when I was small, meeting the Goons, musicians and stars and enjoying every minute of it. Dad knew them all. Lance Ellington first shone as a trombone-playing member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, aged 14. Since then he has blossomed impressively into an all-round musician and singer, appearing in films and on television, and spending a lot of skilled if anonymous time in the recording studios providing backing vocals for top artists and singing advertising jingles for products that are also household names of a different kind. Stars for whom he has done vocal backing sessions include Michael Jackson, Robbie Williams, Take That , Tina Turner, Sting, George Michael, Lesley Garrett, Will Young, Westlife and Steps. He has been a regular backing singer for TV series such as Strictly Come Dancing, Britains Got Talent and X Factor . In his limited spare time, Lance has also managed to write some successful songs, notably One For Sorrow and After The Love for Steps. He also regularly shares his talent, knowledge and expertise in coaching students who attend the Pineapple Performing Arts School and preparing them for West End auditions. Lance appeared as his father Ray in the Golden Globe Award-winning movie The Life and Death of Peter Sellers starring Geoffrey Rush in the Sellers role and Charlize Theron as Britt Ekland. He admits it was a little spooky playing his father, but Lance greatly enjoyed performing songs like You Make Me Feel So Young and Little Bo Peep and also singing on the soundtrack. The experience sowed the seeds of this present album. Singing those songs and the big band style of music brought back a lot of happy childhood memories, Lance comments., Coupled with the pre-production work I did with Guy Chambers on the Robbie Williams album Swing When You re Winning , it persuaded me to try a solo project of my own.

MAGIC 3 Feb 2012
Format:Audio CD
A 'must' for music lovers anywhere. Just curl up on the sofa and let the fabulous velvet voice of Mr. Lance Ellington wash over you. He sings every song so beautifully, enunciating every word (rarely done by singers these days) and you couldn't better his rendition of these classics. This man has a voice that is just pure magic (and he is as good on stage as he is on CD). I would recommend these CDs to anyone who loves beautiful music and lyrics sung by a true artist. I hope that he soon records further CDs for us all to enjoy.

Variety of Aspects 24 Feb 2011
Format:Audio CD
A quality collection of covers and old time favourites.
As a regular vocalist on Strictly Come Dancing Lance has long been able to adopt a wide variety of vocal styles and bash out a very good song.
His musicality is without question as he comes from true thoroughbred stock
The man can really belt out out a good song and this album collection hits the spot.
Enjoy easy listening at its best.

Vocalist Lance Ellington (son of Ray) is suitably exultant on 'Aspects of Ellington' (Upbeat), emoting in authentic Rat Pack-style on an array of elegant standards, John Wilson's orchestra glad-handing in support. (Peter Vacher, JazzUK)
