A short while ago I was watching an interview with Blur's Alex James, and happened to catch him proclaiming that "no man over 30 should wear jeans". This I did NOT agree with. I mean, you don't *have* to go all out to look like Jeremy Clarkson, with his comfort fit stonewashed, unimaginative 'sacky' jeans...nor did you have to follow younger trends and go for the skinnies or the fashion washes. No, I'm of the mind that a man of any age can wear the right pair of jeans. Regardless of my feelings on that fascist anti-denim statement by Alex James, and my feeling towards my beloved jeans, I suddenly became very concious of not dressing my age. Out went all my slogan t-shirts, fashion washed denims, skinny denims...sportswear...you name it. This left me with huge gaps in my wardrobe, and a total feeling of helplessness as to how I was going to fill them.
Always feeling (and looking, or so I'm told) much younger than my years, 39 crept up on me so suddenly. Still with a gaping void in my wardrobe, I was determined to not go to the opposite end of the spectrum and start eyeing up elasticated waist trousers from Sunday supplements...or, heaven forbid, the cardigan of doom. Just because I was stepping boldly into my 40's, it did not have to signal the end of my feeling good about myself, or about my clothes.
So, with the best will in the world, a friend of mine recommended this book to me...and I swear, I have not looked back since. It has given me the confidence to shop on my own, and has helped shape new styles and tastes. It has not changed me completely; I still point-blank refuse to give up the denim...but now I wear very smart raw indigo Japanese selvedge jeans, and then take my tips from the book...a nice pair of Italian loafers, a dress shirt...and yes, I've even found the once dreaded cardigan can look smart, and not at all like I'm trying to do my best impression of my grandfather.
Especially if you're going to make expensive purchases...suits and the like, clothes that will be with you for years to come, this book is invaluable. You owe it to yourself. It seems I cannot step out of the house these days without being complimented on my attire. What this has done for my confidence I cannot begin to tell you.
The book is great for men in their 20's, 30's and beyond. Timeless, classic looks that will never go out of fashion. I honestly cannot recommend it enough.
