Product Description

Product Description

Fran Varady is insolvent, unemployed and, though for the moment she's got the leaky roof of the squat she shares in Jubilee Street over her head, she'll very soon be homeless thanks to the council eviction department.  Her dreams of becoming an actress, nurtured when her father and grandmother were still alive, seem a long way off.  But Fran is a survivor ... which her former housemate, Terry, found hanging from the ceiling of her room, clearly is not.

Terry, secretive and selfish, was far from popular with the rest of the household, but her death shakes the Jubilee Street Creative Artists' Commune, as the squat residents half jokingly call themselves.  And, the more Fran discovers about the death of the young woman whose life briefly intersected with her own, the more she begins to see it was not all it first seemed.

I can't get enough of Fran Varady. I wish Anne Granger would write more! Her Mitchell and Markby Books are enjoyable too, but Fran is my favourite! I like her Indian 'Doctor Watson' character too! I wish the libraries stocked more of them.

Fellow squatter Terry is found hanging. Suicide or murder? Fran Varady investigates - risking wrath from the police and danger from those with grim secrets....

Fran is an unlikely young heroine, streetwise and resilient. A run down part of London is where she feels at home, part of a community doomed as evictions mount and demolition draws near. Less appealing is the countryside where inquiries take her - all those empty spaces and things like cows and horses.

Interesting people. Narrator Fran herself comes over strongly, as does her loyal friend Gunesh Patel - one indeed to prove invaluable in a crisis. Colourfully around is bag lady Mad Edna, living in a graveyard amongst cats.

All is described with humour and affection - focus on the countryside rich and the city poor struggling to cope as circumstances conspire against them. An intriguing storyline, inquiries about Terry to produce surprises and an outcome that may shock.

Likeable. Fran is too good to confine to one book. What good news to learn that there is a series!

Recommended.

What a stud 31 May 2010
Format:Paperback
I'd only ever read Markby novels by Ann Granger. In Fran Varady, she has created a detective way out of left field who is almost as interesting as the plot itself. I hope Fran's complexities are explored in future novels. In her friend Ganesh, we once again have a character rarely seen in detective novels and this helps the whole thing seem more believable. Although a rarity for me, I did see the twist coming, but the simplicity of the motive once revealed again helped in the belief of the novel rather than unveiling a plot with layers of clues so hidden, you wouldn't have worked them out in a hundred years. I look forward to reading more.
