4.0 out of 5 stars An Incredable Achivement, 15 Jul 1998
By A Customer
This book is a masterpiece of reference books. Asimov has compiled a giantic timeline of human civilization. Each time period has been subdivied into individual countries, empires, and regions(when there wasn't a country to speak of). Within each country section, he gives the most important information first, ending with scientific and artistic achievements. The book ends in 1945 with him siting the segnificance of that year and the fact that he would never be able to catch up with current history. The one weakness is that the majority of history given is Western, but that is understandable considering the lack of written reccord in the Pacific and Sub-Saharan Afican regions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impossibly good, 25 Jan 2009
Well, providing that Asimov wrote about 500 other books during his life-time and that he wasn't an historian, I thought that this wouldn't be a very accurate and well organized work. At first, because of the high price, I wasn't even willing to buy it, but I ended up doing so.

I sincerely can't understand where did he find the time to do so much research, to organise it and to write it down, but the fact is that this is a very selective and interesting read. Although this was intended to be a reference book, I had the patience and the joy to read it from cover to cover.

I'm from such a small and "unimportant" country as Portugal and I can definitely assure you that Asimov covered the most important facts of the history of my nation, so I believe the same happened with the other countries which past I don't know so well.

This is astonishing. I want to buy and read more of his books in the future.
